Question BMW 328 E36 - brake servicing

Morning all,

Having never worked on a BMW, I agreed to help my mate service the brakes on his E36 328 coupe.

Just wondered if there's any special tools required for pad replacement - such as a piston wind-back tool? If not, I'd assume front & rear pad change should be fairly obvious.

Cheers,
Steve

Steve,

IIRC, nothing special needed. Certainly not like VW with the piston wind back tool.

Cheers

Thanks Matt,

Nice to know it's not like my old Golf then.

Cheers,

The only reason some cars have windback pistons on the back calipers,is to set the handbrake up,when the rear caliper is used for the handbrake operation..BMW's have a disc/drum set up on the rear. There is a small set of shoes inside the rear discs, these are for the handbrake operation, and should be adjusted when servicing the car,its a bit fiddly but you will get the hang of it..BTW..unadjust the handbrake cables before you adjust the rear drums...

FSF - thanks for that, good tip!

John - you've got similar "specialist tools" to me then!

I think there's summat in the service sheets that says if you replace the rear pads you should check the parking brake drum and shoes. If you decide to do that, wind the adjustment off by lining a wheel bolt hole up with the ratchet bit and poke at it with a screwdriver one way or the other till you can get the disc / drum off. TBH though if it works ok I'd leave it alone!
