cheap second car??
Cant keep using the scooby for work, need a second car. Only got between £500-£1000 to spend. What it is doesnt matter, just want something cheap, reliable and low insurance. Was thinking of something like a fiesta diesel. Any other thoughts??

I picked up a 93 Cav 1.7 Turbo Diesel, does about 700 miles on tank and has enough go (just!! ) to tow 2 bikes to a track day .... paid for itself in about 3 weeks.
Makes driving the scoobs feel even more special.

Another vote for the micra.
Nice and cheap, lasts forever and suprisingly fun to drive.
Recently got one for my fiancee. 1993, 1.0 16v, 5 door, sun roof, silver, 1 lady owner, 60,000 miles, full service history, immaculate. Ended up paying 800 which, does sound a little steep for 12 year old car (and she did have 1200 to spend!), but it's like brand new, inside and out. And, it does 45mpg around town + 65mpg on a run.

I just got a Corsa 1.5 Diesel as a run about. £800. 50k on the clock, FSH, one lady nurse owner. Cheap to run (£15 diesel gets you about 190 miles of mixed town driving) cheaper to tax (falls under the 1.5cc threshold for tax), and next to nothing for insurance(about £100 a year).
But! It's really slow (I think 90 mph is about as fast as you can go), and sounds like a tractor (Isuzu engine).

The wife had a an AX for 2 years till recently - never let her down & cost pennies to run; however for better long distance comfort I would go for a ZX diesel (non turbo). my dad used to have one and very cheap to run.

You can pick up the likes of fiat puntos with fairly lowish miles for less than 1k, also renault meganes are a bit of a bargain, ford mondeo's though they can be a bit thirsty, pug 306's are normally quite expensive as they have a nice 2nd hand market.
If you want a bit of luxury, try a vauxhall omega, you can pick up a 2ltr with 80k for about 1k.
Tony
Oh there are rovers also but thats taste for you
