Fastest and/or Best Point-to-Point road car.... Your thoughts!
As title really while out for a "spirited" drive today I got thinking, could anything beat what I have and if so why?
Don't take this as a self centred "mines bigger than yours" but a truly honest question
So to throw the question to the masses.
what could be better in terms of luxury, driveability, speed, poise, grip than my ruf powered 550hp 911?
edited to add (main reason for this was I well and truly spanked a 360 modena on some very nice back roads at very nice speeds)

The fastest, grippiest, most poised point to point car would be stripped of all luxuries though? Also depends how bumpy the roads are, what the surface is like, wet or dry, skill of the driver etc.
A stripped out high power rice rocket on coilovers and big brakes could do the point to point thing well of course.
What I wanted to find out when we were going to meet is how well your car would cover the ground compared with the modified rice rockets, whilst trying to do the luxury thing as well. The further modification potential of your car is tremedous I expect, but at what price? I wouldn't want to run a car with a ? £20K engine without warranty?

Fastest - not much I'm sure.
Best? Horses for courses really. I just got a nice little 997 cabriolet and the sense of speed and occasion is fantastic, I wouldn't swap it for a 996 of any desciption. A striped out lightweight RA Impreza is also an incredible hoot to pedal down the lanes. I find the 996 interior horribly low-rent, so in terms of speed with luxury I'd take a 997'S', in fact RUF already do a turbo conversion for the 997..that absolutely spanks your car for interior ambience IMHO and will be close in terms of speed. That or a RUF 993TT, I just prefer the 993 shape to the 996/7.

Depends on the roads used for point to point .... typical open, flowing A roads then the RUF would do it. Mostly B-roads, then it would be a smaller / narrower car with better visibility.

Regarding your A-B car question I have been dithering over a Noble M400 for a while now and think that is one of the best A-B cars. Although having not driven an RUF as yet I can't really compare the two.

Did you see the Autocar A to B challenge last year? 996TT won that, Noble second. Unfortunately the Nobles front wheel then fell off Nobles are incredibly fast, just wish they were better built, or that I lived next to a dealership to keep it running

lol yeh I've heard that too ... perhaps a case of the Noble being in constant development and also being developed on a meagre amount compared to the Big boys like Porsche ... If I had £80k though I'd be sitting in a GT3 RS for sure. Perhaps due to my age I have an inbuilt love of large spoilers and all things impractical - hence the noble being the top choice for my next car.

I would say in order of bestest to still pretty ****ing good:
1) NSX Type R
2) 996 GT3 [RS]
3) M3 CSL
4) STI Type RA [not sure which one though, but a good recipe indeed]
It is hard to tell what would be 'the fastest' as it would depend on the road and conditions etc. I think all of the above would be very quick cross country and the enjoyment / fear factor would be second to non.
I think it is worth pointing out that FWD cars can be a hoot and would probably find a 106 GTI / Corraddo VR6 pretty brisk cross country.
The 806 HP Koenigsegg CCR or the 828hp 9F-V400 911 would probably be the "THE" fastest though - despite not having the handling capabilities of some of the others, I figure brute force would win the day - and these two 240 mph monsters would put on a much better show too

My list that would better a RUF 911 in the listed criteria:
Ferrari F60 Enzo
Ariel Atom 300
Porsche Carerra GT
Merc McLaren SLR
McLaren F1
The first 4 just so happens to occupy the top4 fastest cars around the top gear track

Just depends on which point to points. A 106GTI would wipe a Lambo's or Ferrari's **** on a tight bumpy twisty back road. Jeremy Clarkson put a 205GTI against a Diablo years ago, on just those roads. The GTI won. Now, if the points were one end of an Autobarn to the other, then you have to say the Mac F1.
On british roads, then I would say 911 Turbo. All that power through a 4wd system. Most magazine's say the 911 Turbo is just that. It's the one I'd pick.

I was watching 5th Gear a couple of weeks ago, and I remember Tiff compared the Noble M400 to the Mitsu MR400. As I recall the Noble totally Monstered the Mitsu, with one lap completed I sure the Noble was already about a second and a half ahead of the Mitsu.
On Top gear they completed a side by side test, for the Mitsu and a Lambo Murci, where they concluded that the Mitsu was the quicker car.
My point is that, if you can get over the quality issues, a car that is claimed to do 0-60 in 3.5secs and does over 185mph (claimed again), will out run probably the quickest A-B saloon in the world (MR400), surely this would qualify it being quicker than all but the Mc Merc, Enzo and Carrera GT (standard cars)?
Intrested as to what the E60 M5 would compare like against, as a recent Autocar test concluded that it was the quicker over the A & B roads, against the Ferrari 430.

nearer 2000 with me in though
roughly 350bhp/tonne? (metric tonne) is tht the same tonne or not then??
more importantly though using same conversion is 368 lb ft / tonne torque
i think the above is correct but im not 100 %
car weighs 1560kg
550 bhp
780 nm = 575 lbs ft

The FRP is a nice car though and they sure do handle well and look tough, and yes I have been in one which has had a right royal thrashing. It's a shame they don't have any power to match the handling though, it seems funny to me that Ford produced it with such a weedy power plant, 155bhp is skin and rice pudding country.
