Smile Cheap Car - Every day commuter / occasional tow???

I am looking for cheap and cheerful everyday practical runaround car that can take the daily abuse without me having to care!

Needs to be:

1) Practical (boot space, maybe estate?)
2) Economical/Cheap to run (probably diesel)
3) A fairly good tow car (needed to retrieve boat from slipway occasionally, so 4wd could be a bonus... no caravans - I promise!!!)
4) Comfortable for the commute, motorway cruising etc.
5) Reliable

Budget: up to £5,000

Is there such a thing?

Suggestions greatfully received!!!

I see a dilemma. Tow car and slipway means 4x4 and big engine - which doesn't help your cheap commuting request.

**** it, Toyota Surf

I have to say, you have a world of choice, but because you want a diesel estate you will pay premium. But there are plenty of decent motors from one extream to the other :

Example

1998*AUDI A4 avant 1.9 TDi Quattro
Avant 5dr, R reg. blue met, alloys, PAS etc, rare 4WD diesel estate. £4,995. Helms Garage. 01484 42160101484 517571 07921 828582.

or

1998 VOLVO V70R AWD, 145000
miles, Automatic. 250bhp. Black. FVSH. C/control, cruise. ESR, memory seats, winter pack, estate pack, 17 alloys, motorway miles, excellent condition. No canvassers please.. £4,995 . ono.

Cheers guys...

It doesn't *have* to be a diesel estate, they are just guidelines!

I have launched and retrieved the same boat quite happily using an E30 325 sport and Cavalier V6, although the FWD cav didn't have the traction needed, so we had to use a rope to allow the car pull from where there was more grip! I reckon a smaller but more economical and torquey diesel would be up to the job.

I'm pleased to see Audi Avant come up there... that was one that had come to mind previously!

The Volvo..... well that would take some soul searching.... a good suggestion and probably well up to the job and a sensible buy in every repect..... but.... Volvo? The shame.....
