Question on the Porsche GT2????
Why have they dropped like stink in value??? You can get an 02 plate one off Porsche not autotrader for £65000 they are £126000 new!!!!!
Why is this when the Turbos and GT3's hold their value well?? You would think because of the rareness(sp?) that they would have good residuals. They're a bargain if you ask me, 463 brake twin turbo!!!!!
Gav..

I find it bizzare really that a two year old car that is so good can half it's value in two years
It's my favorite looking Porsche of all time though, the wing is just ****! Maybe some of the Porsche heads can throw some light on the subject!

There has been a lot of scare mongering in the press saying that is a beast to drive and calling it the Widow Maker.
The original GT2 was also a challenge to drive but it had a racing pedigree so it's value has increased. This GT2 is seen as just a scarey 911 Turbo.

I certainly don't think I would have the nadgers to use even half of its potential on track, not just from a skill perspective but also from a financial perspective.
in a few years time when we float, well that's a different matter
65k though. I'm still gobsmacked.

The GT2 received a hard time from the motoring press from the word go for being supposedly very unforgiving to drive - a car that should you let your concentration lapse for one second whilst pressing on down a twisty road in the wet, you'd be through the hedge backwards. The regular turbo always seemed to be regarded as a better road car.
For track work the GT3 and GT3-RS were always more highly regarded as better cars for the driving purist than the GT2.
This left the GT2 without a natural niche, apart from for people who had to have the 'fastest' and most powerful 911.
I've never driven one, but this is what I've gleened from porsche and other motoring magazines over the years. I do think they're the best looking 996 derivative available though, and if I was returning to porsche ownership with a 65k budget would give one serious consideration.
Gary.

I believe they were also the car with the highest profit margin as they have none of the driver aids/4wd/gadgets etc of the 911 turbo, yet they sold them for more!

Go and ask the boys on Stuggart 9s - there are several GT2 owners on there. They are cars for people who think 911 Turbos are slightly soft and girly - all that 4WD rubbish etc etc.
Stunning cars. They are unlikely to mask your driving faults and shortcomings in the way a modern Skyline, Evo, Scoob will - hence the reputation

It's basically a cross between a GT3 and a TT. Bear in mind the library photo you have above is of the 2004 model which is still commanding high prices thanks to the positive Evo review and also some nice trick carbon parts.
To drive, it's a lot sharper than the TT and immensely powerful. After having driven a string of fast cars, getting into a GT2 is still a mesmerising experience. Tuned versions such as Guys Ruf are simply out of this world.
I did put an offer in to a couple recently, as you can see, they are a relative bargain.

They were originally bought by people who had to have the most expensive Porsche available. That put them into the hands of people who weren't neccessarily car enthusiasts, but people who needed an icon to demonstrate their success.
This is why many of these cars ended up in the graveyard - if you drive a GT2 as you would a TT, you'll pay for it.
But in the hands of careful and respectful drivers, it can offer a very rewarding driving experience.

I owned a 996 GT2 for a while. Lovely to look at and went like stink in a straight line. Pics here CLICK
I think the fact that you can get the X50 upgrade for the 996 TT to take it to the same power as the GT2 (albeit still heavier than the GT2) doesn't help.
An X50 TT will be faster point to point than a GT2 on British backroads.. it's just too stiff.
As mentioned above, a disproportionate number of people have been killed in GT2s, and some of the dead we skilled drivers (not just rich numpties)
And then there's the small matter of the PCCB brakes with Porsche doing a U-turn over their longevity/usefulness. (and some people reporting £20K bills to replace them).
After all that, it's hard to justify the £30K price from new over a TT.
Basically, for most people most of the time the TT is a "better" car and that's why the GT2 isn't valued as well.
If they had made just 100 cars for the UK (or whatever) then prices may have been firmer.

As most have said. Even Porsche enthusiasts say the handling/traction is'nt quite right. So even in experienced hands it does'nt reward like a GT3 and does'nt forgive normal drivers like a TT. As someone mentioned earlier the 993 GT2 has gone up in value massively but that was made in very limited numbers.
It just goes to show that even Porsche can get it wrong sometimes. If you can call a car that sexy wrong!!
The real bargain at the moment imho is the 996tt. They were £88k basic and most cars have about £10k of extras so that means a £100k car for £50k 4 years on that will probably drop only another £10k in the next 3-4 years. If only I could I would!!
