SHOCK NEWS!!! Pete Lewis is right!
MrsD has just bought a '95 MX-5 I went out for a spin in it yesterday, and blow me if it isn't the most fun I've ever had in a car whilst remaining clothed

Brilliant isn't it?? When the sun shines there isn't a better place to be!!
Unbreakable too AND a 1995 MX5 isn't going to lose any money whatsoever!!
Win, Win, Win!! Enjoy!

Mine was group 14 insurance and had done 100k when i part ex'd it for my scoob, had it 2 and a half years and it never went wrong once, insurance cost was about a third of the scoobs .
The 1600 engine is actually the same block as in the mazda 323 turbo on the earlier cars so i wouldnt worry too much about reliabilty, they are pretty much bullet proof, probably more so than the subaru engine.

Best to be careful if you are unsure of the history but they are pretty reliable, like most cars though if they have been tuned wrong then things will go wrong.

I take mine out when the sun shines ............. just for the sheer hell of it!!
And I don't drive it fast at all .... that defeats the object - makes me feel like I am driving an old MGA in the 60's (but, of course it doesn't need fixing every week!)
A £22,000 Impreza would be left on the drive as a £4000 MX5 was taken out instead (Yes, they really are that good!!)
S2000's yeah fine enough, but too refined and losing money!! A £4000 MX5 isn't losing a penny!

I had one for 12 years (the same car); absolutely bullet proof.
Sold it to a friend 2 years ago.
I replaced it with an STI PPP because of family reasons.
Both completely different cars, but I will buy another at the first opportunity I get.
Apart from speed and the 4 seats, there is no comparison in the driving experience between the two. The MX5 is Much nicer to drive.

The GF and I had lined up 2 viewings over a weekend of the the 1.8 with LSD a few years back. The day before the viewings she found out she was expecting our daughter, so a call to the garage went
"Due to a change in family circumstances we no longer require a 2 seater roadster"
Then I bought a Westfield 6 months later, lol

You lucky, lucky barstewards.
Cheapest MX5 I've ever seen for sale here is about 9000 euros, that's over 5k And no I can't import one, Portuguese import taxes make sure of that.
OTOH I've seen my first AE86 when I went to Toyota on Friday, and the chap told me they're "quite cheap" in Portugal. Maybe I'll look around for one.

I've got an H reg import one which I'm about to sell, it needs a new clutch and has a bit of a rattle so it'll be going cheeeeeeep because I can't be bothered to get it fixed. I'm replacing it with a Disco which suits my needs better although the Eunos has been a lot of fun
Brendan, you can rent it from me if you like

CrisP - as illustrated by the MX5 prices, "quite cheap" in Portuguese s/h car terms means "HOW MUCH? You gottabe ****tinme!" in UK s/h car terms
Edit - just had a look, and the cheapest I can find is 1992, black, leather interior, taxed and tested - for 9500euros. That's £6500
Sal, I'd love to, but the steering wheel's on the wrong side, and (ahem) I couldn't guarantee you'd get it back in the condition it was rented out

how many piston eads really view this as a girl's car.
Surely those in the know, know that this is a real enthusiasts car?
I have considered one recently too, but got a little lost by the limited editions. There are many forums but no real comprehensive faq which explains the model differences.

ok, but it is one of the best all time great handling cars. Allows you rear wheel drive control without having to do silly speeds and doesn't feel slow.
for the money it has to be one of the most fun cars you can buy.
doesn't the driver enjoyment off set the image?
anyone know what the mpg is like?
