Diesel Tuned Hatches.
What is the best Diesel car to tune, without effecting reliability etc?
What power and torque is achievable over standard.
Question based on car worth approx £10,000, not latest BMW stuff.
I am out of touch with the latest diesel tuning and am just interested.
I assume a Volkwagen Group Engine is the best way.

stick a 300 quid tuning box in any diesel and you will easily have Scooby slaying ability (well you will in the mighty Golf Mk5 GT PD TDi 2.0 Sport Indianapolis with optional climate)

Back on topic then.
I agree it's got to be VAG all the way.
Forget the £20 resistor in a box mod.
Adjustable Digital tuning box will give 25-30% increase for a couple of hundred quid.
£350 remap should give 185bhp, and 330lbft from a PD130 so in a supermini or evn a FWD hatch you should slay UK WRX scoobies in roll on acceleration even on the M62.
Reliability? No known problems with engines, turbos or gearboxes but the clutch suffers from the high torque.
TaviaRS's diesel Octavia is known to lap scoobies on the track but it's had a little bit more than a re-map.
Cheers

No such car as a Gt TDi Anniversary diesel, they are 180 petrol and hence far slower,so you slayed a tortoise, but fear the REAL mighty GT TDi,you may need therapy unless you come to terms with its Scooby slaying abilities.
ps see Logiclee agrees,I have a PD 140 sans tuning box and it WILL slay yo ***,honest Banny, accept the truth, its the only route to happiness

PMSL at the scooby slaying comments, to which there is some truth! I have a MkV GT TDi, 140 out the box equipped with a Dragon digital tuning box, have no idea of bhp but it moves far better than in standard guise for only £250 and can be removed prior to servicing/warrenty work in about 10 minuites.
No, it won't slay a scoobie but I have an STi 8 and unless you have ***** of steel it will get you from A-B in the same time and the handling is nothing short of amazing (forget the Mk3 & 4's - bath on a skateboard stylee). The Mk5 might be out your budget but this coupled with the 17" upgrade alloys which incidently run the same rubber as the STi (225/45R17) make for a very capable car that returns 45-50mpg, i.e. 500 miles for £40!
Yes they are different cars, built by different people to be good at different things, thus said the STi 8 performance does no 'wo' me when I jump in it at weekends.

My brother has a new mk 5 gt tdi 140 and the only thing "mighty" about it is the price! he used to drive an S3 and says the tdi is so boring in comparison.Economy nothin special either. Its nippy but no fun to drive( and sounds like a tractor as well!)

People often quote how economical diesels are. At the end of the day, you cannot get power for free. The more power you have, and actually USE, the less economy you will get. Its all fine and well to have a 180bhp diesel, but if you use all that power, you will not be getting 50mpg
They are good machines to have if you do not use all of the power all of the time though

you are correct on every count
but when it batters a Scoob in fifth between 45 and 50 all its ailments are forgotten
actually, ist not that dull a drive, infinately better than the Mk4,but anyway,no point talking to comfort blankie 4wd bods who can't handle razor sharp fwd handling, you won't agree

Thermal efficiency of a modern diesel is far greater than a similar petrol engine and the VAG 1.9 (Pre PD) still holds the record as the most thermal efficient engine fitted to a road car.
The new 2.0 VAG unit is not quite as efficient and it's not as tunable (Yet).
To drive my scoob to work would cost me around an extra £100 a week in fuel alone and the Octy only needs servicing every 30000miles as well.
The Scoob is far better to drive and ultimatley quicker but I would have to be mad to drive it 120miles a day.
Cheers
