Pug 205 gti 1.6 or 1.9?
Thinking of buying one as a cheap fun runaround.
Used to own both 1.6 & 1.9 in my teens but cant remember the diferences between them. How do they compare.
Ive seen a couple of nice 1.6 cars so considering these.

Having owned both I would say get a 1.9. Only 15odd bhp more, but feels like much more - has more torque and more low-down pull. Far better to drive (IMO) - feels like a bigger capacity engine than it is, foot down in any gear and pushed right back into the seat!
The 1.6 is a more free-reving engine, and if you enjoy thrashing through the rev's it might be more your thing.
The only reason I bought a 1.6 was because I couldnt find any decent 1.9's and kept seeing lots of nice looking 1.6's around, so bought one - but it was a mistake!
Wont be easy finding a good one however, and theyre starting to fetch good money now.

The 1.6 is more free revving and the slightly better set up suspension car, buts thats only because it makes it easier to drive.
The 1.9 is the way forward though, its the daddy Rear disc's, leccy windows etc, nicer wheels (best ever alloys on any car actually ), leather seats, more torquier engine etc. Just watch for LOO

not much difference mate, i've got a 205 as a road rally car, started life as a 1.6 but after a few events i changed it to a 1.9, on the road the car isn't much faster and doesn't rev half as well as a 1.6 and i actually kept the 1.6 box which should make the car quicker but its not that much better.

I have a 1.9 track car. Fitting the 1.6 box to mine made a noticeable difference in the acceleration. Seems to pick up quicker

there's a problem with the 1.9 which is toffee crank bearings (or at least 1.6 ones). the 1.6 isn't any slower up to 90odd cos of shorter gears... its a bitch on the motorway tho

I would get a 1.9
Went in one recently and after the rose tinting of my youth (1994 I had mine) it seemed slow compared to what I remember. Seemed like a missile then. My mates just done it, and I've had a few goes for old times sake.
Best thing is that lift off oversteer (in my youth) used to be something to be wary of. Now it's something to be exploited. Still mega fun if not that quick anymore. Good balance still between performance and handling, great feeling to get it squirming through bends. The magic is still there if you buy (or build) a good one.
Parts for peanuts on ebay. Also I didn't remember it being so plasticky inside when I had one, but hey....

cheers guys
Would prefer a 1.9 but there ever too much money for a good one or cheaper ones are bangers. Looking to spend about a grand as at the end of day its gonna be a fun 2nd car/runabout.
Anyone used these guys. http://www.justgtis.com/
Nice examples but pricey. Remember selling mine 6 years ago for £1500.

I have just bought a 1.6 and it is being fitted with a 1.9 engine.
Whatever you go for you will enjoy.
Just GTis have a reputation for being "expensive" - check out www.205gtidrivers.com - some good cars for sale there.

if you want a cheap 1.9 just buy a 1.6 and drop a 1.9 in it, i done this with my rally car and it works out loads cheaper than buying a genuine 1.9 but you get the same package, you can easily pick up a 1.9 engine for £80 or less, i've bought 3 recently and their all good engines.

Not necessarily. The 1.6 was always supposed to have the more balanced chassis and was easier to hussle along the back roads due to a better spread of torque/power delivery.
1.9 is the daddy tbh, and when i had my first 1.6 I always felt like it was second best when sat next to a 1.9, but there isnt that much real world difference between the 2.
