Just wondering how reliable these are... looking for a manual one.
Not interested in performance at all as long as it'll do 70mph
Also...what's the insurance like for a 25 year old on one?
As ever...thanks in advance...

I had one when I was younger, never had any trouble with it, but that was 6-7 years ago. If you're buying one now it's prolly gonna have quite a few miles on it.
Insurance shouldn't be that bad as it's only a cav with a nice body shell on it.

Generally pretty reliable. I had a V6 for 3-4 years, even after tracking it a couple of times, it never really flinched (apart from some brake fade and tyre wear on the track). I remember the old 8v engine from cavaliers and it too seemed to be good for reliability, partially as it was a nice torquey engine you never needed to thrash.

The 8v engine (C20NE which produces 115 bhp) is seen as bullet proof. I've had two cav's with these in and no probs whatsoever. The bottom end is very similar to the redtop's (16v's). The gearboxes (F16) are usually fine but there is a tendency for problems with third gear. Keep it in 3rd for a while to check it doesn't pop out.
A must though is to check where the rear suspension (IRS) meets the chasis - the car is notorious for rot around these area.
Rough idling will probably be the ICV which is on the top of the engine and easily cleaned to solve problem.
Front discs can warp = brake judder.
