My new Aero
Saab number 8!! Whats wrong with me???
Saab 1994 9000 CS 2.3 Turbo Aero
Not everyones cup of charley, but I love it.
I just though I would share with the group.
For the unsaab initiated:
225 bhp
258 lb/ft
149mph
and pretty good handling for such a big heavy car.
cheers

Really really nice. Got quite a following haven't they?
Edited to say I was driving up a steep hill in the Honda Prelude Type S that I owned at the time, Right in the V-tec 'zone' 50-70mph accelerating and one of these passed me like I was parked up. Impressed me.

Andrew.
Thanks mate. The 9000 aero especially has got quite a following. They have the Trionic 5 engine management which makes the very tune friendly..By the end of the summer it will have a Maptun stage 3 which will give approaching 290bhp and 440Nm.
http://www.maptun.com/webshop/produc...318&produkt=82
My last 9000 2.3Turbo with a stage 3 (although not aero) gave 50-70 times of about 4.2s! in 5th! So much car for the money.
The one that passed you wasnt a grey K reg one was it?
NL
The seats, like you say, are fantastic. Leather, high back, electric, heated with memory settings. Dare I say it on here but I prefer them to my 97 UK Impreza turbo.
What's 'RICA'?
cheers

Q What's 'RICA'?
Just another remap/chip tune but you've already got that covered. Don't doubt you prefer the car as a whole to your Impreza, just not quite as much traction eh?
Really a lot of car for the money.

Rica is a remap generally found in Volvo's - but the software can be applied to most cars. I had a 850 T5 with a rica remap - result was 305hp and 310 lb/ft (in theory) but not many ever reached that power, more like 270-280, however on raod perforamance was very similar to a 996 carrera 4s to 160 mph !!!!
Anyway, the Saab looks sweet. Are they expensive to buy !?!?

I still miss my scoob though.
I hadn't heard of RICA before. I will look into it.
Just had a look on their website and it looks like they dont do the 9k Aero.
cheers

I bet that 850 scared the hell out of a lot of exotica. Very nice.
Have you seen the video clip of the overloaded 850? If it was you that originally posted the link then apologies. But it was awesome nontheless.
9000 2.3 Turbo (200bhp) are very cheap..I just sold one for £1000 with a mere 130000miles
The aero due to their higher spec do demand a higher premium. Nice ones can be bought for as little £2500-3000.
Cheers

I asume they are similar to the Saabs. A bit unsuspecting lots of goodies and power
Despite my car being an auto it was frantic all the way beyond double the speed limit, but the chasis was not the best and despite me throwing lots of money at brakes and suspension, i would still struggle, so it was best suited on a motorway or fast a road - happy days.......
Day 1
2 weeks before she went.

Very nice Andy.
An auto Volvo estate...who would have thought it...a 996 eater!
I will do the brakes and suspension on the Aero but i will never expect the car to be something its not, hence sticking to motorway and fast A-roads too.
I gather that they make those volvo auto boxes properly to cope with 310 torques?!
Wow, those new wheels really suited it. What were they?

The wheels were a sort of replica of the 70 series R wheels. They were £500 wheel tyre package, but ditched the dodgy tyres (as seen in the picture) and laced them in goodyear eagle f1's which i found suited the car well. The car was pristine throughout as it remaind for the 18 months i had it, and that includes mechanicaly aswel. Oil change every 5k, and tranny fluid change every 10k. the box seemed fine and the new owner keeps in touch (ex evo 8 owner !?!?) and he thinks it is fantastic, and easily as quick as an Evo 8 300 mid range, which is nice to know. But as i said no brakes and nos suspension with lack of traction limited the progress, but once rolling it was alot of fun, esspecially going around Europe ignoring all the speed limits - lol....

I do like my 9k Aero (now that it is quite well sorted). Currently on target for stage 4 (310bhp and 360ftlbs) out of the standard TD04. Watch that gearbox fall apart!
Traction in low gears isnt great and you dont get full boost until 3rd gear so traffic light stuff in anything but the dry is a bit pointless imho unless you shell out for an lsd. It will toast from 50 to 100+ in 3rd gear in not very long at all though which is the fun bit.

'esspecially going around Europe ignoring all the speed limits - lol.... ' gumball 3000 by any chance?
I sense you are about to get another one?! Am i wrong?
The saab auto boxes have got a bit of a bad reputation with high torque modifications.
Sounds like Volvo got it right though.

To be honest Brett i was being naughty and not on the Gumball - lol. I would love to get another T5, and i might actually aim for an S60R once i am bored of running a cheap diesel hatchback, although the soft spot i have for the slightly flawed but legendary 850 may sway me. My mates 850R saloon is slightly rough but well maintained and with a replacement turbo and bespoke exhaust and RICA 4 stage map, he is packing just over 300 hp @ wheels with a manual box and 120000 miles, so i would say the volvo is spot on for durability.
Anyway this is way off topic.
How many of your 8 saabs have been aero's or have all of them been aero's !!?

Nice to know there is another Aero owner on here. Welcome to SN by the way.
Just out of interest who did your stage 3?
The LSD is on my 'to do' list. Will get that from Abbott probably.
There is another chap on here, ylee coyotee, who has an Aero with, IIRC, 405 bhp! Awesome!
cheers

I have to admit that I am not really a volvo person (i dont mean this like i dont like them just that i dont really know much about them)..generally speaking you are either saab or volvo, rarely both, however i really do have a soft spot for the 850. I think it is a great looking car and they go very well.
This is my first Aero, i have had:
1 x 96 V4 (well this was my dads officially)
3 x 1980ish 99s
2 x classic 900 turbos
2 x 9000 2.3Turbo (one of which was an Abbott Racing stage 3)
1 x 9k Aero
btw, i didnt think you were off topic...it was still within the sexy swede theme.

Cheers! - Stage 3 was Speedparts(BSR) and was a real hoot. Currently standard again and fast but dull.
Stage 4 will be Maptun - and I've got the volvo V70R 'green giant' injectors sitting waiting to go in when I sort out the ECU.
Springs, dampers, plenty o'poly, rear ARB, strut brace, uprated clutch and better brakes have really sorted the car out, as have my new Eagle F1s - fantastic!
120k miles and it feels really fresh and tight with no creaks or rattles. Roll on 200k...
I like the look at the 500bhp stage 7 conversion... must start saving.

Skinters.
Sounds great. I must start saving some cash to buy some toys too.
I have considered the Speedparts stage three myself, it seems very good value for money.
Which brakes did you opt for?
As for the Maptun stage 7...i can only dream.
Do you frequent the saab forums?
cheers

yes - either as skint or faero -many posts! Brakes are just Pagid fast road pads and Brembos all round with dot 5.1 fluid and braided hoses so it now stops where before there was definitely some doubt.... It could do with a big brake conversion though £££
On the point of being a relatively dull looking car, I have had it for 2 years and have not once been challenged, raced etc. so have actually no idea what the relative perfomance is. Does me fine though and gets me 33mpg on my commute.

. I think you have helped me out on many a saab question in the past!
That was the brake upgrade route i was tempted with, what put my off was the massive increase in insurance premium.
Off to saabscene now as Im sure SNetters are getting fed up with my saab speak.

Saabnuts ahoy in my family - My Dads 9000 aero is awaiting a stage 3 maptun jobby, a 9000 2.0 turbo, my brothers 99 turbo in mint condition with 40000 original miles and my two c900 t16s - on black 'vert and a hatch currently being restored which should have 250+ ponies once its back on the road. My cousin also has a c900 ruby - he's probably doing 140mph as we speak!!!!

Nice that there is yet another saab nutter here.
99T with 40k.....very nice.
Last time I read about ylee's aero I thought he had reached his planned target.....just goes to show you can never have too many horses.

I am new to Saab, starting with a 9-3, Y reg, only the LPT (150) but these can be chipped past 200 bhp and to be honest its quite quick enough for my commute, it feels properly fast strange as it may seem, its sooo torquey its like a diesel, will get it chipped when I have had it a year or so (money), I have had a T5 as well, damn fine car, I think I may stay with Scandinavian cars in the future.
Got to love the 9000, they never seem to look any different, the dont rust, the owners by and large seem to look after them and many say they are better than the 9-5.
Quite fancy an Aero myself.

Glad to hear that you are still enjoying your 9-3. You have gotta get it chipped though mate, makes such an impovement over what is already a good car.
From the list of tuners I sent you did you have a preference to who would do the mods? I am 99% sure I will be going with Maptun for my stage 3. (see earlier post)

Thanks mate.
I have also chatted with you on SS. I was 9k 2.3T but have just sold my 2.3T to pay for the Aero so am now Aeronaut.
Maybe now that there are so many saabers on here we could arrange a group buy on some 'bhp'. True scoobynet fashion.
