Default S2000 tuning, where?

My mum has a Honda S2000 and is not too impressed by the lack of low down power. Where would be a good place to look for a few mods?

Or are there any owners clubs out there?

Thanks,

Graham

Get her to rev it, that's how it's designed
Not much you can do to get more 'go' apart from slapping on a turbo or supercharger which would have to be done properly costing £'000's. There are some other minor mods but I doubt you'll feel much of a difference. Popular mods are exhaust (not for performance, just more sound/loudness) or CAI (helps with kangarooing in hot traffic jams).

Thanks guys, I'll check out the forum. I've driven the S2000 several times and it seems like there is bugger all power until the Vtec kicks in. My brother's Civic Type R seems more responsive. I think a new exhaust, some sort of different air filter and a remap/chip are on the cards. Mind you, it's a pleasure to drive once it's up and running, and sliding the back is soooo much fun!

Cheers

Another option is a VTEC controller, could set it to activate at less revs..

Sounds like a plan. My only question is would this put extra strain on the engine/ have any long term downsides (other than using more petrol)?

Tell her to drive it

I've just got my S this weekend and its massively fast. It could have easily matched my 275bhp MY99 scooby when up and running IF you drive it properly and drop as many gears as you need to to put it RIGHT in the zone. Even dropping to 'just' into vtec isn't enough sometimes. It pulls hardest from 7500rpm and that is what I aim for each time.

Utter bollox, plenty of grunt all round, the VTEC isn't as much of a kick as everyone seems to like to make out...

Ask her if she's let the hand brake off

I like driving and can't help but rev any engine to within 5rpm of the limiter. I can't help myself Final I've found a car that really doesn't mind

Sounds like she needs to sell up and buy herself something more suitable. Leave the drivers cars to drivers!

plenty low down grunt in mine, amazed as I was expecting it to be sluggish pre vtec, not true.

vtec is a progressive influx of power.

VTEC contollers aren't a good option IMO. As said, power gainsform mods are minimal. Remember, this car holds the record for amount of BHP per litre (NA) from any production car, but power is all up top. I personally think it pulls bloody well under the VTEC...

They aren't designed for mothers, tell her to buy a Z4.

You can't do much to improve the cornering

We do a lot of work on VTEC's and its surprising how much you can get out of them including additional power lower down the rev range. We have adjustable cam pulleys, VTEC controllers, induction kits etc all in stock. If you want to go the whole hog then turbo or supercharger kits are viable options. Our project Civic VTEC turbo is in the final stages 500+ in a Civic anyone? LOL People do however make the mistake of bringing in the VTEC too early, the engine needs to be revved to make full use of the additional lift offered by the VTEC so bringing it in early just makes it run rougher and use more fuel. As with any other car, a remap or fuelling change and some of the inlet / exhaust restrictions removed makes for a thoroughly driveable car.

Thumbs up

VTEC controllers don't do what they say they do, the S2000 engine is not very tunable.

My Mum owns an S2000, she wasnt impressed until I showed how to drive it, she is 57 and loves revving the nuts off it

Conrad, what method of mapping do you do? Hear the Unichip is coming on, but has variable results... Do you sell the Gen2 K&N filter?

Trust me, i have spent ££££'s and got a peak gain of 6bhp, lots of torque in the midrange and more power lower down but if your fitting the usual induction and exhaust then your looking at zero gains, nicer noises yes but no more poke...

The design of the intake box and cone is very good really, just not sure on the restriction / divider between the air box. Im sure its like that for a reason though...

back per buck is to go forced induction, which imo kinda defeats the purpose of buying the car in the first place

As for the restrictor prob something to do with air flow pulsing or summit clever like that

Mines in the bin anyway, replaced with these

For me, it's a huge plus that the car is so hard to mod. I've viewed it is a complete car, no modding required...it's saved me lots of money

I might go for an induction kit and exhaust just for noise...one day...

No disrespect to Conrad but the S2000 pretty much comes out of the box making as much power as it ever will...I've seen people who've spent huge £££ and got maybe 10bhp out of it.

If you're serious about tuning, search on s2ki for posts by a user called turtle...(Brian) I belive he went to a lot of trouble tuning his car for torque as he had a bad knee and wanted to avoid changing gear...I think he writes for Honda Revolutions Mag too...there's not much he doesn't know about the S and always posted with huge common sense rather than the usual bravado...

All the above is for staying normally aspirated of course...

I've had my S for quite a while now, and after the initially enthusiasm and desire to mod it, I just learnt to love it as it is

Mark, the Unichip is coming on but the preferred method is to get the OEM ECU changed into a fully mappable unit. Then it can be remapped forgetting about all the EU emission restrictions etc

This is also the preferred method on Civic Type R's with turbos or superchargers. Its a cracking engine and with all them revs to play with it responds really well to forced induction

Yes, we have access to the Gen2 K&N filters but dont keep stock.

Cheers
