Default Clio Exhaust £525!!!!!!

Just had a quote for the g/f's exhaust (mid pipe and back box) for her 02 Clio 172 as above. All I have to say is **** me, there must be a cheaper way even Kwik fit wanted £380.

Apparantly you can only get Renault parts due to its age as nobody else makes them yet.

Dont suppose anyone on here has any bright ideas?

Don't listen to this BS mate.

I bought a Magnex 6x4 oval for Clio 172 in 2000, which I retro fitted to my Clio Williams at the time

Forgot to point out that its standard copies that nobody does yet, plenty of stainless ones about

Discovered part of the reason for the cost, Renault dealer charging £60 per hour for labour and apparantly it takes 2 1/2 hours to fit an exhaust
You can fly to the south of Spain in that time FFS.

I dont think my g/f wants a stainless one due to the increased noise and probable knock on effect on the insurance. Looks like it'll be a Kwik Fit job.

The standard mid and backbox is in 1 piece so has to be cut to get it off. To fit a genuine Renault 1 the rear axle has to be lowered to get the new 1 on in it's 1 piece hence the labour.
How about having a system made up with the "quiet" option if you don't want the noise?
I had a magnex (3.5" tail) fitted to mine and it was loud - 1 week after having it fitted the cat pipe snapped (hmm coincidence?)

The standard Clio172 exhaust is already stainless steel from the CAT back. I'd avoid a Kwik Fit job, it'll most likely be a restrictive crappy steel that'll rust to bits in 2 weeks, weigh a ton and would be based on a 1.2 clio, don't think any car deserves that!!

I got a full cat back 3" bore stainless pipe made for my MR2 by Hayward and Scott for £528, asked them to make it quiet, they did its quiet. They are known to be expensive but very good, i'm sure a powerflow dealer that actually got a good reputation should make you one for £250.

I had this done today
T304 grade stainless steel with a lifetime warranty. Custom made & fitted with a hidden tailpipe just like the standard one. The fit & finish is superb. Loads of speed hump clearance. It can be made to sound as loud or as quiet as you want it to.

Cost me £289 and is way better than the Powerflow or Longlife stuff I have seen.

This place is well worth the visit and has a fantastic reputation. Charlie will sort you out

I can tell you that the standard exhaust is definitely not stainless steel. I saw it from underneath and the condition of it was horrendous considering its only 2 1/2 years old. It has almost snapped in the middle.

It the axle has to be lowered, then that explains the labour cost. Kwik Fit were going to order the Renault exhaust, but they obviously dont know about the work involved. Dont think thats a good option after all.

Think there are some powerflow garages around here, so will look into that one. Having the tailpipe hidden in standard form was one reason for avoiding the stainless ones on offer as they all seem to do away with the idea.

Some useful info provided, scoobynet never ceases to amaze me

The exhaust for my wifes old 206cc was around £900. Something they don't tell you when you buy the car! (ended up getting a local garage to fashion a replacement section for £130).

There are other reviews, eg Car Magazine, cliosport.net. in which states that the exhaust is indeed stainless. Like I said, its not the fancy T304 or whatever though. Stainless was used for lightness and for 4-2-1 manifold.

K-Tec don't know the meaning of a quiet exhaust. Even their quiet options are louder than most.

Thanks for being so imformative! You're right though, its from the manifold to backbox not just from the CAT. Despite what these reviewers and other magazine articles say, what do you think its made of ?

Note that stainless steel isn't magnetic or very slightly magnetic if there is chromium in it, where as regular steel is highly magnetic. If you don't believe me, take a magnet to and see for yourself, asuming you drive a Clio172 of course!

If you think the exhaust is expensive, don't let your side airbags go if you have leather over 1K per seat!!!!!!

If they went off though wouldn't it be covered by your ins assuming it happened in an accident?

Yeha it well could be just the Mark 1 172s that have the SS system, after all it was the superior model :P

Two seats and a big ding are very near to write off value and there is no way you'll get your cash back from an insurer!!!!
