You are, without doubt, or fear of contradiction from any sound minded person, the saddest man ever to post a thread on this forum! I may drive a pink car, but at least it isn't an icon for the hairdressing fraternity...believe you already own one of these 60s throwback replicas, just to compound your obvious gimpness.

"Mazda MX5: The third generation of Mazda's ever-popular sports car attracted plenty of attention from Geneva show goers, not least for its pumped up wheel arches and more macho stance. "We have measured this using special devices," said a spoesmank. "We have optimised new MX5 so that it is 15 percent more manly than before. That is a significant increase in manliness which will manifest itself in sharper handling, more shouting, and farts". With an all new bodyshell, the MX5 is claimed to be 107.6 times more torsionally stiff, at a class-leading 1 million pentametric Newtonings."

Guy at work bought a brand new one 2 years ago, special edition thing with cream leather etc. Without a doubt one of the most saddest images I have is him driving around with the roof down. Tragic really. My ex had a 1.8 yellow eunos with 'uprated suspension' etc. That was a very slow car and to do any overtaking at all on single carriageways induced ring pinching.
An ideal car for the life crisis balding bloke, but not for me ta

They look bloody superb. MX5 is a motoring icon, unless your one of these pansy boys that worries about what "image" they portray.
A genuine car enthusiast will realise what great cars they are covering many angles, rather than the incessant labling that people give - hairdressers/reps/mums blah blah. A good car is a good car, simple as.

Regrettably the new one will probably entice the hairdressers out of their Audi TTs further degrading the reputation of what is actually a drivers car. Just read the reviews.
Hope the new one is as good on the road.
I have to declare an interest as I have 2 MX5s and a WRX and they all leave me grinning when I drive them

I'm with Dream Weaver on this - fantastic little cars. Beautifully balanced, sharp handling and RWD. Always liked them, although some of the special edition ones are a little OTT as scoobynutta mentioned.
Yes, there are quicker cars out there, but that isn't the definition of fun motoring. Anyone can go fast, but cars that involve the driver, respond to their inputs, give you loads of feedback through the steering wheel, allow you to gentley oversteer in a progressive manner without putting you into a hedge backwards are much rarer.
I reckon a lot of the dismissive comments come from people who've never driven them - bit like the Boxster, which also suffers unfairly from the 'hairdresser' tag, when it is a fabulous car to drive.
I think the new MX-5 is cracking looking car. It will sell by the bucketload. There is talk of bigger engines aswell, so it should be quicker to satisfy the speed freaks too!
BTW this has nothing to do with me now owning a Mazda!

I remember an MX5 Turbo track car up at Croft a few years back and it was a flyer. Also worth checking out the MX Turbo staff car in PPC (Practical Performance Car).
I'd buy an MX5 if I could fit in the bloody things

There was a silver one on the RS day at Bedford and it was one of the quickest cars there. Considering the cars there were quicker than at the subsequent SIDC day I will say no more ...........

Superb Cars, MX5s!
Fun, Open Top Motoring at its absolute best!!
Those who laugh at them haven't driven one ..... I just wish they weren't so bloody popular - too many people go chasing the best ones and pay silly money!

It's a Boxster unless you're on about something other than a Porsche. And I haven't driven a tractor either. Although I'd drive a Boxster, I could never bring myself to drive the MX-5, sorry it's just too gay
Sat in 2 mx5's now for quite some miles, and standard, they are mightly slow. Possibly better on a track where oncoming traffic isn't an issue , but can't see anyone in a uk classic or above having too many problems as long as they can drive. If you're talking modded or non standard MX-5s then you can also chat about higher powered Imprezas

And how is calling them gay different from calling anyone who's worried about the cars image a "pansy boy" . Think you're the one who's 12.

Regardless of what Gary said about Bedford, the thread is about the new MX5, not about whether they are quicker than an Impreza.
As for pansy boys That was just an expression I use to convey my thoughts on people that pander to brands/labels - I just never understand why someone would not do something or drive something simply because they worry what other people would think.
I'll say again, a true car enthusiast would not worry about being seen in a certain type or brand of car if it was a driving icon.

Pete - don't you see the irony of your like for MX-5's and your dislike for anything a bit "gay"......
The MX-5 is a gay car. You must be gay to like it
I'm ordering one for my wife - but you'll never see me in it

Bit presumtious to assume that people who criticise them haven't driven them....best to ask the question rather than make the accusation. Driven rather more of them than I would have liked when in the motor trade, and stand by what I said. Appreciate why the more effeminate types might like them, just didn't light my fire. The Boxster's an entirely different, and better, proposition. Despite being just as gay! Besides, Lewis hasn't got a Boxster, making it better if only for that reason.

Poor mans Boxster
Quite liked the original MX5 (the one that looked like the first Lotus Elan), but never been keen on the later model which has rather odd japanese styling and just doesnt look quite right IMO.
