Does anyone have any opinions on these, except from the 'Chav'esk' label that they seem to carry...???

I am thinking of getting one in the near future, i have always liked them and they have to be cheaper than running a Scooby....Don't they...???

What sort of Engine transplants can be done, how good are the shell's at this age...???

Any help muchious appreciated...

with these you pay your money for what you get. i wouldn't buy a cheap one and get a standard one as you've got more chance of it not being ragged to death and it could be worth more than a modded one.

as for engine transplants you can go the whole hog and build a zetec turbo. 2 ltr and you could expect to see about 300bhp, but it'll cost you a fortune to do it. or go for a zvh you get some good power and reliability at the same time.

i had a series 2 for about a year and a half and enjoyed every minute of it. personally though if it was me i wouldn't sell a scooby to buy one, but that's just my opinion.

if ur going to buy a mk1 rst then really u shouldnt be moding it..... for the price u might as well buy a cossie for a good series 1 u will be paying about 6 grand then to zvh it properly about another 2-2500 so a lot of money but if thats what u really wont i dont think u will be dissappointed and it will still be worth good money in years to come

do any mods to a mint series 1 and you will devalue it big time. only standard series 1's command high prices. you may get away with a stage 2 head, kent cam, collins chip. and thats it!! should see 190bhp at that. i did this to my series 1 and it was prob the most you could take it without losing traction. look after the box as well, it was specially made for the series 1, had a lsd. to be honest you will struggle to find one that you could use as a daily driver, they are unreliable, the spark plugs need changed all the time and they are a very hard drive even with the standard suspension. prob best to get a mint series 2 as they are more practical. but then again thats just my opinion

I think a mint, unmodded S1 is past the chav labeling now or at least it deserves to be. Think the S2 still has that reputation though.

Like most people have already said try and get a standard one if possible and leave it standard. The biggest problem is getting a good standard one now most have been run into the ground If you don't mind getting your hands dirty try and get one that needs bit of work, as long as the shell is in decent nick the mechanical parts aren't to hard to work on.
The biggest problem now is tring to get some of the bits like parts of the bodykit and the interior is nigh on impossible to get a hold of now.

I've never heard of an s1 beeing labeled a chav car. It's an enthusiasts car, if you have to ask these questions it's probably not the best choice for you.

I had a S1 for about a year - it was a great car - totally standard except from a full s/s exhaust. I had no problems with it at all, i would definatly have another one.

saw one in the under a grand section of the 'trder few months ago, all cos it had some rot on one of the wings!

Wish I'd bought it, lsd as standard iirc.

Why not try and source an RS1600i, far more exclusive, performance wise it would waste an RST, (bit hairy in the braking department though), had a white one few years back, loved it !, good one now will cost you about £4k.

Just a thought.

Series 1 RS Turbo is a great car IMO. There is an absolutely immaculate one that lives near me that only comes out in the sunshine on a weekend, which as you can imagine is not often in Yorkshire!!!

I have been tempted many times to make him an offer, but dont really want to run 2 performance motors.

If I didnt have my Supra though I would be sorely tempted by one!!

Mate of mine has one which only comes out twice a year, once for a MOT and again for a quick service, totaly original and mint but not concorse (only cause he hasn't botherd to go that far with the cleaning).
He's collected spares over the years and has original alloys and tyres that have never been on the car (tyres still have labels on, original tyres are no longer available) and spare recaros for the front (fabric is no longer available which is why you see a few retrimed in leather). Lovelly car, brakes takes a bit of getting used to after driving more modern stuff though.
Wouldn't buy one to use everyday but as a weekend toy would be very nice
RS owners club is the place to go to find a nice secondhand one, not sure when the national meet is this year but that could be worth a visit. If you do get one please leave standard .

I'm quite inquisitive as too how the RS1600i is quicker than the RST though, can you shed some light on this...???

I am ultimatly thinking of selling the scoob to make a bit of cash, and to buy a daily driver (as my scoob was/is) that has a bit of poke and that is a bit unique, not a modeo/Vectra etc etc...

But after some of the replys here i don't think the RST is gonna be as reliable as i desire...???

Anyone have any ideas on a good daily driver for around 4kish, got to be a bit diffrent.!!!

Whilst the performance figures are not too different (8.6 for the 1600i & 8.2 for the RST) the actual poise and driveability of the 1600i made it a quicker car point to point, the RST seemed a bit more of a civilised vehicle compared to the 1600i, due to different engine internals you could rev the 1600i right round to the red line (which I seem to remember was higher than the RST) and the car would pull evenly right through the rev range, where as the RST was a bit on/off boost type thing.
The only real drawback with the 1600i when driving quickly was it's keeness to fish tail when braking hard, this was easily sorted by fitting the stiffer anti role bars off the Orion.

I owned both, and still prefer the 1600i for not only performance but at the time it's rareness, oh and it had the most comfy seats I've ever had in a car (exclusive to that model only).

I am not so sure that an RS1600i would waste a Turbo. I had a 1600i a few years ago. Superb car, but in a straight line the Turbo would be quicker (assuming both standard), though not by much. If you talk about handling then yes, the 1600i is better IMO, particularly the later ones ('84) which had different rear suspension mountings (from memory the anti-roll bar mounting was modified, but not 100% certain as this is going back a few years).
The 1600i was always a fairly rare car and I would imagine some of the parts are hard to come by. A weak point used to be the twin coils, and many were modified to use the XR3i setup. Mine never had this problem and was totally reliable. I am tempted to get another one, but havent looked into prices as yet.

Had a series 1 about 9 years ago,put a full stainless exhaust on it and a set of konis. Was the 1 car i wished i had never sold.Used it as a daily driver and only had a few little problems with it.If i had the space i would buy another 1 to use every now and again.If you keep them serviced and look after the bodywork you would more than likely get the money back that you paid for it after a few years.I cant see that the rs1600i would be quicker than the rst either! Get one bought

IIRC the RST was as quick in 5th gear acceleration as an XR3i was in 4th. IIRC the major differences between an RS16i & XR3i was the body kit, wheels, interior & twin coil ignition & 10 bhp (115 bhp) (RST 130 bhp & 130 ft lbs of torque at 3kish revs ) You`re right though they did have great seats (Sheel)

Used to have a nice series two, but sold it when a lovely B reg series 1 came up at the right price, this was 8 years ago!!! It was a very good car up until the point when the wife drove it into the back of a bus! I really believe that if the bus incident had not have happened I would still be using it today.

If its a car that you like then go for it, they still look good when you see them on the road..

dont think the rs will be a reliable daily driver like you want had all 3 rst fez s1 and s2 all were a little say tempremental but all 3 were tuned.As for the 1600i been quicker maybe not much in it on the open road but in a drag race the rst would walk it both cars were designed with rallying in mind both are very very simaler underneth but one has a turbo and looks better! and a good rst is around 5 grand a good 1600i is around 3 grand

I had a series 1. Really loved it. Did not see many other girls drive on so got a we bit of respect from other owners. Always get a nod as they are so few nd far between. Mine had a few of the usual simple mods. magnex exhaust, konis, uprated bushes all round which tightned the suspension and a tune by the only company to go to IMHO Power Engineering, RR'd at 144 BHP (wow you go ).

Only trouble I had was a we bit of rust/bubbling on the rear valance at the seams iether side. Also under one of the side skirts.

On two occasions someone tried to steal it but never got past the security. So I was allways paranoid about it.

Still oved it and one day will get another if the right one comes along.

Oh and it need never be sai but dont EVER change the styling/wheels or interior. Best left as nature intended

Heres mine I bought about 3 months ago.
31k From new, totally immaculate body under and over.
I payed over 5k for this and tbh I thought that was a bargain looking at others.
Expect to pay 4k - 9k for an ok one (4k) and concourse show winner (9k)
If you change it from standard in anyway the car will depriciate very quickly, everyone wants standard now as they have got to the age of classic status.
I wouldnt suggest this kind of car as an everyday ride, very rough and very ready definately a Sunny Sunday car imo.
