Default Diesel or Petrol?

Need to get another car as a commuter. About 80 miles per day. What miles per gallon does a Fiesta 1.25 zetec get as oppossed to a Escort Turbo diesel. I gather the diesel would do more around 50 mpg but it seems impossible to get a good diesel for under £2500. What do you think would be better all round.

Escort has the old 1.8 indirect injection engine. Really old technology and not in the same league as modern TDi's for economy.

I had a Mondeo with the similar engine 1.8TD and averaged around 40mpg.

Why not have a look for an older Octavia or Golf with the VAG 1.9 90/110 TDi. You will avarage 50mpg all day and push 60mpg on a gentle A road run.

As for the Fiesta, they are fun to drive but there's no guts in the 1.25.

Cheers

Id agree with the above. Ive just got a golf 1.9 115 bhp gt tdi for £6400. Youll be able to get the older 1.9 110 bhp golfs for the money you have. Generally bullit proof, but youll have to do searches on reliability on each model, every car has its faults.

Id certainly not enjoy doing a regular commute in a fiesta or KA or something, although cheaper to run i expect theyd be fairly gutless on a motorway

You can get an early Octavia for that money - and in good nick without starship miles.

55mpg+ all day long on runs.

This one won't make much over the money you mentioned (if at all):

FWIW, I get 320 miles out of a £35 tank in my Festa 1.25

Would probably do more but the engine encourages you to rev it and they're quite fun in the corners (considering it's a Fiesta )

'Tavias are excellent, and they seem to be rivalling Toyota's as the minicab of choice round here so they're pretty bombproof. Plus you could always remap it if you get bored!

Cheers,
Alex

The VAG TDi 110 is a very good motor, it puts out a big wodge of torque (185 lb-ft) and really does do the economy that it claims.

You can also have them remapped for about £300 to 130bhp and 230lb-ft -- without denting the economy too much

Lots of choice of car too -- late MkIII Golf or Jetta, Passat, Audi A4, Octavia etc etc. If you can get one that's had the cambelt service done already, so much the better.

I'm in the process of doing this. I've opted for a flat cap, pipe & slippers Rover 420Di which is costing me about a grand. Supposed to be able to easily get 50+ mpg, and it's not that slow either.

Only problem so far has been the insurance, which is ridiculous even on TPFT, as all my NCD are on the Scooby. (Norwich Union quoted me £1100 on a car valued at £1000) Still, HIC have sorted me a decent deal out

Yep,

I run an Octavia 110 TDi Elegance for my dialy car. I fitted a Dragon Tuning box (£124 on ebay) which gives 140bhp and 200lbft. Filled up today at a cost of £37.50 and have done 563miles which is near enough 55mpg. Fuel computer is showing over 60mpg but the tuning box does make it overread.
Most of my driving is on A and B roads. Some owners squeeze 700 miles between fill ups on gentle motorway runs, not bad considering the warning light comes on after 10 gallons has been used.
Jabba will remap the 110TDi to 150bhp and 225lbft for £365.

Cheers

Looks like im going for a escort td ghia. Its dirt cheap at about £850 and i can do most of the servicing myself. I am struggling with insurance quotes as well. My 7 years no claims are on the scoob with egg. Best i have had is £845 fully comp which pisses me off . I can only drive one car at a time. Would of liked a low mileage golf tdi but might use the escort for a while and save a bit more money.

Pudders - try HIC on 08451 290 290 (and say you found it off the Wakey-Wakey website - gets 5% off). They mirrored my no claims and gave me about a 70% discount.

Got to be worth a call at least?

A big thank you to Duck Pond. Just tried HIC and got a great quote over £250 cheaper. Thanks mate.

I believe www.elephant.co.uk will match your ncb on another car (if you insure both of them obviously)
