Default Merc E220 cdi?e320 cdi....opinions/experiences please...

Does anyone have any experience of the E class merc diesels....

220 cdi's are very cheap...but I assume that they will be sluggish....

320cdi's are dearer, are they worth the extra cash...

Or would a BMW 530d/330d be a beter buy...max budget is about 13k, which will buy a decent enough (highish miles) example of each...

i have been in a E220Cdi and i was impressed it was nippy but i wouldn't say quick.

However i was behind a E320cdi in my A6 2.8 quattro and i was surprised how much i had to put my foot down to stay with him.

I also know some one who has a 330d and these are seriously quick cars especially if you get them tuned at DMS automotive.

Go for the beemer.

My friend has a E320 estate (old shape) I reckon it goes really well, considering its an auto.

Excellent big cars, will run forever if looked after properly, they do have rust issues, but this can be taken care of under warranty, a well specced E320 is the obvious choice, but a chipped E220 is not a bad second choice.

We've got an E320 CDI. VERY pokey but like all diesels, runs out of revs far too soon Classy motor but there are rust issues with the doors, bootlid/tailgate, and wings. All sortable under the 30 year anti perforation warranty. Class motor, very smooth. I'm lovin it !

I've been a passenger in a recent (2 or so year old) E220 CDi, and was very surprised and impressed with just how refined, comfortable and quick it was. I was expecting something rough and sluggish, but nothing could be further from the truth.
