Anyone have experience of a Land Rover Disco tdi . Thinking of having a look at a 300tdi 7 seater 1995, it would be used as a the family bus 3 young kids and her mainly.
Are there any reliability issues with a model this old.
Have been hankering after a Pajero but have not come across a decent one at the same kind of money as this L.R.
cheers Colin
please don't suggest a MPV thingy

My Dad had a 200tdi and now he has a 300tdi which he has for about 2 years. They are very reliable vehicles but servicing costs are high. A lot of money was spent on both models on the brakes and i was dissapointed to see surface rust on the chassis after the car was only two years old. However the previous one eventually just fell apart but was still going strong and even got a trade in value.
They are very practical, the 300tdi handles better than the 200tdi but neither could be described as fast. I am currently considering a new discovery as for practicality nothing beats them.

don't know about 95's but in my experience discoverys are the most unreilable car in the world ever. Every time you try to get things fixed under the extended warranty they try to claim that that particular fault is not coverd under warranty.
Well I've had mine for a year now, and so far have replaced the brake pads and alternator on a vehicle nearing 95,000miles. BUT it's off-roaded seriously and chucked in major muddy puddles.
The 300TDi is quieter and generally better mannered than the 200, it's a cruiser, as said, don't expect them too be fast.
Servicing is every 6,000ish IIRC (I do mine more frequently due to it's use though), and if you can do an oil change, fuel filter and ait filter change it's easy to do yourself (after all, it is a Landy
). Or find a local specialist, there's 100's about.
I love my Disco, always started and never let me down and considering what I put it through that's something!
For an honest view, check out Land Rover Enthusiasts Forum ...if there's one thing Landy Owners are, it's honest!
Main check points: Frequent Servicing, leaking sunroofs and alpine lights (check under the boot carpet), scoring on the swivels and mud on the top of the chassis (after all, most havn't been off-roaded, so you might as well get one that hasn't
).

Cheers guys/gals ,nipping over tomorrow for a look, today too busy looking at Pajero's which were mostly out of my price range ,the only ones affordable to me were '92 models
jap import dealer incidently, as is the guy with land rover for sale but he's offered decent £ for my WRX as a trade in and the LR is cheaper to start with.
Just don't want to end up regretting not buying a Pajero

One thing though - compare parts prices for a Landy with those for the pajero.... I think the Disco ones'll be far cheaper, easier to source, and easier to put on.
There's a huge land rover following around the UK - similar to scoobynet, but most of the forums are cr@p, and nobody posts anything... Look in the right places, and you'll find a good disco of that age.
Other thing - did you think about a very late Range rover classic tdi? There were still some being built in 94-95, and the last ones were far nicer than the disco. They're even easier to get stuff for incidently...
