Is the Range Rover 94-02 Reliable?
Just seen a some nice examples of this car on the used market. I do about 50-70 miles a day mainly stop start visiting house's. I have read a few different reviews on the range rover and they are all completley different in view of the cars reliability, what car giude is one star and parkers is 4.
Can anyone tell me the truth lol. The model in question for me would be a early (95-97) 4.6 HSE with an LPG conversion ( any idea on economy much apprciated too). with a budget of around 7k
Any info would be a great help Thnx

There ahave been some problems with the 4.6, but my friend has one, a N-reg 4.6HSE, he's had no problems at all with it and adores the motor. Even on a 3,500 mile trip around Europe up to 10,000ft off-road on road tyres the vehicle was fantastic
Cruises superbly, but if you're doing that milage the gas is a must with the V8. Without the gas consuption is always in the 'teens' depending on how you drive. I know it's alot better without but couldn't give you an accurate estimate.
Reliability is always a bit hit and miss with Landies (but mainly because they're happy to go on to 300,000 miles, so the stories you hear are usually 100,000 miles + ), but parts are cheap and if you find a local specialist who's good you won't have too many issues
Between my and the other half we have an old Rangie, 110 defender, disco and SIIA - so that's got to say something

Is the Range Rover 94-02 Reliable?

Against a Ford Focus, Definetely NOT
Against an Aston Martin Vantage, or Rover 25/45 and Alfas. Definetly YES
Sorry for being a bit pedantic, but that's the way they are. There is lots to potentially go wrong on these things. So don't go buying one for £8K thinking that's all your going to spend. As when things do go wrong they do cost £££ especially, it's down to luck in the end of the day.
Electrical/electronic and gearbox are probably the worst in terms of costs, V8's are also prone (4.0,4.2 and 4.6) to a long list of niggles, which in general is a pain, but with the right sources not so expensive to put right thankfully.
Watch out for badly setup LPG conversions...they have a habit of backfiring into the inlet manifold and kill the MAF sensor in the process (so make sure it runs ok on petrol).
The 4.6 V8 version had a number of problems with cracks in the block I've heard. Many of these were replaced under warranty, but there's no reason why the same problem couldn't occur again.
The 4.0 version on the other hand was supposed to be better in terms of fuel efficiency etc, without a significant loss in power.
I 'm fairly sure the Polis use the 4 litre ones as well.
I know a guy who delivers trailers for a well known company, up and down the country. He has the 4L car also on an S plate, with no probs at all. He has a 100 litre LPG tank in the boot, and a spare wheel well LPG tank also, which he tells me is easily enough...
I used to have a Classic 3.5 V8 on LPG, which I think had a 70 litre LPG tank in the boot. That on the other hand, wasn't enough, and it was a right pain in the @rse trying to make a long journey. Really nice cars
- but they're not remotely economical
One other thing - get one with a well known make of LPG conversion from an approved fitter, as they're hard to get anyone to insure 'em otherwise.
