Dont suppose anyone knows if the standard wrx 04 unit has a pre-out on it ?

The original speakers have a depth of 38mm so if your replacements are deeper than that (most are) you will need a corsa spacer or an MDF collar.
U.S. head units will not have RDS radio and the frequency spacing will prevent you from receiving some UK stations. U.S. radios use .2KHz steps e.g. 100.0 100.2 100.4 so you will not be able to get UK stations that end in .1, .3, .5 etc.

Garycat is correct ..... no RDS on USA units ..got 2 head units in my limo and both radios are pants, cd works ok though.
Lots of cheap head units on ebay but be carefull as some are yank units.
I was like you and did not want to change the head unit but in the end i did and it makes a hell of a differance
