First car?
following RollingBurnout's dilemma (see http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthrea...=366197&page=3 if you've missed it) I wondered what other forum users first cars had been (and at what age you owned it?)
Obviously there are mixed ages using this board so if your first car was unusual in any way, please help set the scene i.e. was it a shed?, or the dog's whatsits for its day?
To start the ball rolling mine was a MY84 Renault 11 'coupe' (i.e. no back doors...) with a 1.4 engine. I was 18, and compared to most of my mates motors it was not too shabby.
Fascinated to hear your responses

Hi,
When I was 18 I had a 1.3 Beige Escort. Complete P.O.S; it cost me a small fortune in parts and didn't even have the decency to die completely, just kept needing more parts! I loved the independence it gave me....when it worked... but I promised myself that I'd never compromise on car choice again and wait till I could afford a decent performance car..
9 years later....
Now the very pround owner of a lovely MY99 Turbo. It lived up to the hype, justified the long wait and banished the demons of first car at a stroke. I love it to bits
I Hope I never have to own a "normal" car again!
Best.

Now I'm 22 and have just bought an Evo VIII MR FQ320....not bad going me thinks

My 1st car was mum's 13 yr old Fiat Panda - 900cc and 45bhp when it was new
It was better than getting the train - just! - but I think it must have scarred me mentally for life. For comparison, the new STI I'm supposed to be picking up in a week or so is seven times more powerful.
Thinking about it, the Panda might have gone quite well with 7 engines... lol

Would have been errrm, about 1989. First car .... Triumph Dolomite Sprint, had twin carbs and would happily drift around corners at about 15 mph. Nice WR blue as well
Sold as wings had more filler than metal for a Vauxhall Chevette which (on a wet day) I rammed into a no parking sign when attempting a corner too quickly

I have no idea what power that had but it ran and ran. Owned it for 3 years, got it with 70k on the clock and scrapped it with 110k. The mechanics were still fine but the bodyshell had died
Never washed or serviced that car

I had a chevette as well, 1300cc 1981 special edition 3-door hatch( i.e. it had a factory fit sunroof)
wasn't a bad little runaround, since then I've had:
Morris Marina 1.3 4 door saloon- written off
Vauxhall Nova 1.2 - 2 door saloon
2 vauxahll cavalier 1.8 (6 month lease)
Vauxahll Astra 1.8 (6 month lease)
3 Vauxhall Vectra company cars
A westfield SEW 1660cc (lotus 7 style kit car)
And I currently have:
1.8 zetec Mk2 mondeo estate and a 1.8 Mazda MX-5
I'm seriously thinking about a forester 2.5xt for next year

Vauxhall Astra Mk2 1.7diesel estate at 17, lucky enough to get a new golf 1.6se mk4 when I was 18. Just after I turned 21 I sold the golf and now own an sti 4.
Mk2 escort 1300 sport, put it into a hedge at speed had it repaired and drove it around half orange half primer for about 6 months and thought it looked cool when it reality it looked ****ing stupid!
Vauxhall Viva HC (1973 or 74 model year I think - what was 'M' reg the first time round?), 1256 engine, red. At age 18 or thereabouts.
Cost me 135 quid and broke down (snapped clutch cable) on the way home from buying it. The heater was stuck on maximum so it was fine in winter - but in summer you tended to melt while driving it even if the windows were open. Oh, and the sills were rotten and there was a hole in the passenger footwell you could see the road through, which a previous owner had patched with a flattened baked-bean tin. Also, the inlet manifold had cracked and someone had tried to seal it back together with wood filler...
In short, a complete dog of a car. But on the bright side, at least it was a set of wheels, which revolutionised my life back in 1984.

Mk1 Golf GTI 1.8 Campaign.
Never crashed it (had a few near misses though), but it got nicked after about 12 months of ownership. Toerags crashed it and carved up the interior before doing a runner - it was a financial write off

Austin Allegro 1750 SS (Sport Special) in purple (officially blue)
Had it a year and cost the the same amount in repairs as I sold it for.
Amongst things that went wrong were a front wheel almost falling off while driving down the road!

First car I owned was a Renault 18 Estate (green) with a 1.7 engine. I was only 16 though (I intended to do it up but never quite got finished).
First car when I finally got a licence after 17 years of waiting was a Mini with 1430 engine (overbore and offset ground crank), standard MG Metro head and carb (no filter), peashooter exhaust and standard drum brakes. I loved it but my Dad and the insurance companies hated it. Got nicked while parked outside some birds house overnight in Levenshume. I actually cried, especially as I had 3rd party only insurance which still cost me about £600.

MK1 Autosprint Escort, steel wide arches, rollcage, buckets etc, although I never got to drive it due to an accident as a passenger, just before my driving test.
Went in the car though many times with the previous owner. No sound better than twin 40's!!
First car I drove and owned was a Zender BMW, first completely colour coded car I'd seen with matching Alpina alloys and an electric blind in the back. All well bling for 1984.
