Question MR2 mk3 tyre advice please

A mate who's wife has one of these has come to me for some advice on tyres. So to gain as much info I thought I'd ask here. It currently runs on standard 185/55r15 fr and 205/50r15 rear, Bridgestone's RE720?

Firstly 195/50r15 sounds like a good idea on the front as anyone with a 205 1.9 did yaers ago, but would this upset the handling balence? Are the 185's there to give safe (!?) understeer and might 195's make it a bit more twitchy, but this would presumably only notice if the driver ever got close to the limit. I don't think that they drive it hard so probably a reasonable swap. Any thoughts or experiences.

Then we come to which tyres, OE probably bridgestone, should be reasonable but often OE are chosen for bulk price rather than developed for the car, which is it in this case? From recent experience I would probably recomment F1's, transformed my Pug (previously on P700z) and soon to go on my STi3.

Finally any know of a MR2 forum (a link would be handy) that might also be able to advise me.

thanks

madmoog

Hi Moog

Have a look at http://www.mr2roc.org/. Should cater for your needs. On the front page is a link to some info on tyre choices

There's also a fair bit of info on there if you search the forums about different widths, wall heights, etc.

If you increase the width of the front tyres you must do the back tyres as well. Look on IMOC (UK)

Careful which tyres you choose. A fair number of Mk3 owners have complained of skittishness and/or lack of grip when switching to non-OEM tyres. Some think the OEM are the best for the job.
