ALthough not econmical a Volvo S70 / hight spec 850 T5 is truely awesome, just under 2500 rpm @ 70 - and during my recent europe trip did a smooth 5 mile run @ 125 mph on cruise control !!! I would say they are the most comfortable cars for the job !

For £5000 you could pick up a rough Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II or III.

It'll be a shed, but a quiet shed at that

Citroen XM 2.1 or 2.5TD.

I used to have a 2.5TD 'Exclusive' and it was the most relaxing and quietest car i've ever been in. Drove to Paris and back in 24hrs once and it was lovely.

Fully active hydro-pneumatic suspension so they handle amazingly yet are still soft and quiet when cruising.

Only downside is, they're not to everyones taste and there's a lot to go wrong on them. If i gave up Scoobys i'd have another.

You can pick them up well cheap now.
