Daily Runner/Track Car for 1k
I'm after a daily runner for work to keep the miles off the Skyline (which I'd still use the odd day). I'd also like the car to be used for the odd track day so it needs to be something fun
1k tops limit which ideally would include inurance (I can add a second car to my current policy for a couple of hundred quid!).
Now - I currently have an R33 GTR and a 205 1.9 GTi so the 205 is out as a choice as I already have a good one on low mileage. Thats the reason I don't want to use the pug, I bought it with the intention to keep the miles off it and in good nick so rules out using it as a daily/track car. I take it out for a blast every other weekend an love it! Couldn't have another as it would detract from my current one.
So that leaves me open to suggestions. Nothing Vauxhall or Ford really , current thoughts are something like a MK1 MR2. Would be nice to hear what other people think/recommend so away ya go............

Are the CRX's really that cheap mate? Now theres a thought
LOL @ 205
I thought of a golf, but I've always been a 205 man in that respect, one or the other - bit like the old Amiga/Atari ST days

If you are happy with a 1.6 16v (non-VTEC) car then they start from around £600-£2000 (Mint)
For £1000, I would expect to find:
1990-1991 car
Approx. 100k on the clock
MOT/Tax
Maybe some minor rust (rear arches/sunroof)
History
For less that £1000:
1988-on
Expect rust on the chassis (under the black side skirts)
Duff bushes
Water pump/radiator need replacing/etc
VTEC's start from about £1800 and up. I've seen one for £6k, but that did include a T28 turbo conversion!

What are you like - a Skyline and a 205, and it's the 205 that gets taken out for the weekend blasts
As for what to get, I would definitely go for the mk1 MR2. I had one for 7 years and it was the second best car I've ever owned (current steed being the best ) Despite being routinely thrashed to within an inch of its life, with an oil change once a year if it was lucky, the car was indestructible. And a real joy to drive. They are not the fastest in a straight line, though not slow, but can certainly embarass much newer and supposedly better machinery in the famous twisties. None of this boring power steering or ABS to dilute the experience. Contrary to what a lot of people say, they are very controllable on the limit and can provide much oversteer fun
Only drawback that I am aware of is a tendency to rust, particularly around the rear arches and underneath the side skirts. Mine also rusted around the windscreen, not visible until I had to get the screen replaced. This was the reason for selling in the end.
Oh, and make sure you dont buy one with the reg C###GKO as it will be completely knackered!

cheers Andy, I'll bear that in mind!
Would like to avoid any major stuff whatever I buy, but except that in this sort of price bracket stuff will need doing! Not to shabby with a spanner so I could probably do most things on any car myself..........

Though I have to admit, running the Skyline everyday is a little silly as since end april I'm close to 9.5k miles which is shed loads for me!
And hence onto a 3rd car for a runner!
Mk1 MR2 does stand out, I've always kinda liked them and their boxy/wedgy shape. I've heard rust on the arches, sills and screen is an issue so I'll try and look hard if I get one! They certainly appeal though, and a cracking little engine!

Hi ScoobyJawa
I'll have to second or is that third the Mk1 Mr2.
What a great fun little car for hardly any outlay. Ive had two as second cars. never had anything go wrong with them. In addition to the bad points about them already pointed out though, i.e, rusty wheel arches etc the early ones alloys corrode like crazy!! but still only a minor point. Oh, if you consider the t-bar really really check the t-bar seals. If the vendor isnt happy about you getting a high pressure hose on the t-bar wonder why!
Good luck

Just had another thought.
How about a classic 900 saab turbo? easy and cheap bhp gains.
The other reason for an old saab turbo is that for your budget of under £1000 the car is likely to be pretty old, say 10+, in which case cars in this sort of price range are likely to have pretty big mileages, but in the case for the saab the mileage wont be a problem (assuming correct serviving etc) they are bullit proof, in fact in the event of WWIII the only things about will be cockroaches and old saabs..which is the more attractive though i ask you!

Get that 205 tracked It wasn't designed to be tucked up in a warm garage - get an Mi in it, some bodies etc then go and use it.
They are future classics, but IMHO the only ones worth money in the future will be the concourse 205's that have been locked away since 1991 and unused. Mine is a mint miami Blue (best colour ) and I do sometimes think about saving it, but sod it they are meant for driving.

I don't agree with that mate, look back at current classic cars now how many are and were (before being restored) concourse cars. I think any generally tidy well looked after car can become a classic.

More CRX related stuff here
You need to register to read the forum.
Also, have a look in 'CRXs For Sale' quite a few at your budget.
If you need more information, do a search, there's loads of info there!

Then you have to worry about the 'baby fund', the 'school fund', the 'college fund', the 'uni fund' and then it's time for your mid-life crisis car..... a porker!!!
