Question 16v Polo... How fast!?

On the way back home a cheeky young man in a black 16v Polo zipped around me getting off the A3 at Esher. We took the same route back toward Epsom and the Polo certaintly could shift! At one point there away from a set of lights was a new Z4 (so at least a 2.5), then the Polo then me in my Legacy Turbo (Standard - No mods) and I had to be at 60-70% throttle to keep up..

Driver was a bit of a d!ck as he overtook a loooong line of traffic where he had no idea if any other traffic was oncoming - but even then it definitely had a bit of poke.

I think it was almost definitely lowered, but didn't really expect it to be that fast.. Could it have been a 1.8T engine from a TT/Cupra transplant? Maybe NOS? What are the standard specs on these?

Thought the Polo 16v was a 1.4 100bhp. The GTI is the fast(er) one, IIRC....

One with a 1.8 T transplant would destroy a standard Legacy in a straight line.

Yep, he definitely was rather rapid. Wasn't sure if a 1.8T would fit in but if so then that would explain it!! It was pretty zippy around "the twisties" too - probably a bit more chuckable than the Legacy!

Maybe it's time to start tweeking the Legacy.. What's the point of stealth if you can't beat a little Polo

Had a 1.6 8v MK4 Polo which tbh isnt far of the 16v version.

Probably best described as nippy certainly not fast.
1.8T will fit into polo but costs serious cash 10k from last I remember.

Possibly VR6 convertion so maybe turbo converstion to its 1.4 or 1.6.

From what youve said def not standard.

We didn't get upto 3 figure speeds, I was quite impressed at 0-40/50 and in gear acceleration.. Maybe I wouldn't have been if my car had 350bhp as opposed to 197

A VR6 conversion might explain things if the 1.8T is big bucks.
