Anyone had any experience with these cars ??? How do they drive, are they quick handling ???

Unbelievable car. Quick in all conditions, secure and a nice environment for a passenger (I've never driven one)to sit in.


If they cost about 40K less I could afford one.

Frequently described as the fastest point-to-point car in real (i.e. non-track) driving conditions. They also come fairly well loaded as standard - i.e. PCM etc

As for my thoughts on the car that i have never been in or even been in a scenario to provoke one into letting her rip - so i am unsure what they are like, as for the recorded 415 bhp standard and 190 mph top end, i will asume it is reasonable !!!!

I was behind one once in my Sti and flashed him on the m'way doing about 80, he took off like I was standing still. Anyone who tells you different is a joker, my standard 996 C4 is faster than my Sti at the top end and handles better. 0 - 60 is similar, after that its the Porker.

GT3 is an infinately better motor. Good old normallly aspirated power.

In my opinion, of course.

GT3 is fab, but it is much more track focused than a Turbo. Point-to-point on the road, in all weather conditions, the Turbo would make more sense. Performace is awesome in either. If you were serious about your track days, then I would look to a Mk1 GT3 - this would set up back about £50K.

Performance in the TT is stupendous. I drove a friends 996 C4S with the factory 340bhp upgrade and thought wow! How much quicker would a TT have to be to be quicker than this? I then had a go in a TT and 1) it wasn't the 450 X50 upgrade version and 2) I don't think I used full throttle at any point and it was still eye wateringly quick - wignificantly faster than the C4S. In every gear and at any point in the rev range.

Be VERY careful. Have a go in the C4S and you will wonder why go you will ever need a faster car. If you make the mistake of having a punt in the TT, you will end up having to raise another £40k because the acceleration is unbelievable.....

Over 400 horses, and lb's of torque delivered through awd trasmission - it ain't slow! The main thing in my view, as with most super cars is the luxury side makes them very heavy, those very impressive figures, become less so when you work out how heavy they are, over 1.5 tonnes in this case, so 272bhp per tonne plus of course loss of power through the transmission system. That said, you are talking about a luxury car that can go from a stand still to 100mph in ten seconds, and pass 62mph on the way in the low 4's. You might get beaten by a westfield, but they'll be cold, and possibly wet, and you can be in air-conditioned pleasant cabin, listening to your fav tunes (or just the engine noise)!

All 996's were good, 911T is extremly good - GT3 RS exceptional IMO..

The complaints you'll get are that it's turbo not N/A, and it's fourwheel drive, always very funny to hear on a Subraru forum (hmmm what a silly set up, who on earth would set up a car like that) and of course it's bleeding expensive, and other cars could deliver similar kicks of less. But depends what you want from a car, there are lots of things 911T ownership offers, the Japanese can't match... I wouldn't own one myself, but they're a very useable supercar, sure you won't be dissapointed. Alt: NSX-R?

Take one out for a testy probably best place to start...

C4S is the same power as the C2 or C4 - I have never heard of a factory power upgrade for a C4S?

Wow - very impressed by the knowledge of you guys - the car is for my old man and he currently has a 996 C4 cab, not the quickest and it's a 1998 model. On enquiring for the 997 it seems the turbo cab is years away, so he is looking for a 996 turbo cab - problem is the car he fancies is in Park Lane Porsche Centre in London, a long way from sheffield, so this advise is good -

The only problem is £119,900.00 for a 53 reg 2004 car with 5000 miles - good points is every option, ceramic brakes, performance upgrade, sports exhaust etc......

A caveat: I'd imagine the 911 Turbo's suffer from the same RMS problems as the N/A models and boxsters. Could be very expensive if it happened out of warranty.

Davyboy - yes there is a factory (also can be added after delivery) power upgrade option on all 996's. On the N/A models it adds around 25bhp & about 20lbs torque & on the Turbo cars adds around 30bhp & 35lbs torque.
Its expensive (£6k or £8k from memory) but retains the warranty.

JDM - nope the RMS does not affect dry sump engined 996's, so the Turbo, GT2, GT3 & GT3RS do not suffer from the RMS problem.

I had a 996 C2 & a 996 C4S before the Turbo & really quite miss that little puddle of oil that seemed to be always on my garage floor !

Your dad sure is a lucky man. I've heard there are only about 50 996 Turbo cabs in the country.
As a slight aside.... If one had £60kish to spend on a real supercar what would one buy from the following
1) 1999/00 Ferrari Modena
2)2001 996 Turbo
3) 2004 997 S ( ie 350 BHP)

ps I'm sure there was no factory power upgrade for NA 996 range.

Deep, there was an upgrade for the 996 range......brother in law has one & it sure moves quickly........ not quite as quick as the bike, but a darn site more comfortable & safe........

There is a factory upgrade for both the n/a 3.4 and 3.6 996s. Gives 20-25 bhp depending on whether it is a 3.4 or a 3.6.

You can also get this done by Porsche after-market.

£60k for a super car:

1. 996 GT3
2. New M5
3. 996TT

PS you would be lucky to get the Fezza for £60k

Deep, the 997 will hold it's money and ultimately cost alot less to run than the TT or 360 (over 2 years). Saying that though, 996's are 10 a penny now, and the 997 will go the same way, whereas the 360 still looks exotic. It's gonna be a head or heart decision. I ended up with a 996 C4S in Speed Yellow...good compromise and I wanted 4 seats.

You will struggle to get a GT3 for £60k (a Mk11), same with the 360.
In fact, £60k will just about get you into an early higher mileage 996 Turbo from a private buyer.

I needed a car that would be used every day, swallow shopping, kids, not cost a fortune to run & was reliable. Not a typical wish-list for a super-car but the 996 T does all this & more, so that was the one for me.

the fact it does 0-60 in under 4 secs & over 190mph was just a bonus !!

Did'nt know about the upgrades for the 996!
OLd fart, speed yellow, subtle! (lol)
GT3 maybe a little uncomfortable for everyday even compared to the other cars?
360 maybe a struggle at £60,but easy at £65ish.
I've seen two 2001 MY 996 TT with less than 30k on the clock at specialised dealers at about £63k, so thats not really so difficult.
Anybody driven a 360 and a TT ?
