Question Rover 1600 K series problem

Posted on behalf of a mate, can anyone advise?

His brother has just done a headgasket on a kseries rover engine(1.6) and had the head skimmed. Now he has put it all back together the crank locks when u spin it to get the timing right... if u take the cams off lobe the crank will spin freely.. and if u lower the pistons the cams spin freely...

we r guessin that someone has skimmed the head a few times and maybe its now too low and the valves are hitting the pistons when they are set up right timing wise. he's gonna try stickin the old headgasket on too just to see if it all clears.

Has anyone got any ideas? None of us are too mechanically minded with such things...

Are you REALLY certain that they are set up right? Sounds iffy to me although impossible to be certain with a 'remote' diagnosis.

Other possibilties ... why was the head removed in the first place..... previous valve damage? Are valves fully returning to their seats and not sticking partially open?

Did you not measure the min piston crown/ valve clearance first? How much did you take off?

To be honest mate it sounds as if you need a new cylinder head now!
