I have a 3.0SE Auto, cost £35k new. It is a great car, and yes there were some early problematic X's, largely due to the fact it's Jaguar's first all wheel drive and they had drivetrain problems.
After a big argument with Jaguar, they basically swapped my troubled 2001 car for one that had no history of problems. Had it since January and no problems
PM if you want more info.
Cheers
Matt.

Have driven a 2.5 sport and found it essentially a lovely car but I felt that the steering was over light. Also I found it very thirsty as I had to give it a bit of stick to make decent progress. I had a 2.0 d for a weekend and managed to average 40.5 mpg over 400 miles of pretty enthusiastic driving - the whole car seemed to suite the lazy torquey wafty style of the diesel. If there was a bigger engined diesel available I'd suggest that would be the best - the problem with the 3.0 is that its a heavy engine and from the Ollie Reed school of drinking.

Driven both Jags, the 3.0ltr sport is a lovely motor. Looks best in darker colours. Very well kitted out, and handle really well. Infinately better than a BMW 3-series, really don't like them unless it's a M3.

Not sure, but they're 230bhp - so not at all bad
Dapster is right about fuel economy, they aren't great - but probably more to do with permanent 4WD.
Oh, and the touchscreen SatNav is the best I've used in any car.

Thanks for the suggestions.
What's the 4wd experiance like? I'm a big fan of RWD. Had a WRX before and thought the feedback from the steering was crap.
Is the 2.5 sport RWD?
Thanks
Jay

Just given one back that I had on loan from a Hire Company while I'm waiting for my RB5 to be repaired, it must have been the biggest piece of CR*P that I have ever driven, Slow, no, Unbelievebly Slow, Stupidly Thirsty, Uncomfortable, Handling of a Tesco's Trolley, with the Build Quality of Bo Bo the Clowns Circus Car.......

If you want to hang the back out on every roundabout then you'll be disappointed - it's an exec saloon at the end of the day. The car handles like a Mondy which can only be a good thing. Turn in is sharp, and the whole rig feels pretty nible especially if you've tried a Merc C class or an A4. I still prefer the 3 Series - it's more precise and generally more Germanic - stiffer, more solid and if you choose the right wheels/tyres/suspension combo will be a more precise tool.
I think the X type suits torquey diesel, Sinatra on the CD and a lazier driving style - it does that job very well.
That said you're not going to get the responses of a Caterham so don't expect too much. I think the X type steering is far too light. AFAIK, the 2.0l are fwd and everything else is 4wd.
I think that RB1539 got a duff example - hire cars get horrific abuse so you need to try a few to get the feel of things. As ever, have a drive and tell us what you think.
If you can bear the image, try the 3 series - it is a fantastically well engineered motor.

Dapster. The 3.0 sport BM is great I have to agree, but boot space was crap and equipment levels aren't great i.e. you don't even get individual climate control, sat nav etc.
What's the Lexus IS200 SE like. I know it must be slow, but is it really slow?
