hi
ive just been offered a alfa spider, 1997 as a swap for my impreza 1996.
what would you do?
it looks mechanically in order, and externally also.
anything to look for when going over everything?
help is appreciated

Couldn't really tell you what to look out for - except all electrics (including hood) and gearchange.
My brother has a 3ltr Spider, to look at and listen to it is fantastic
to drive it's fast cruiser, to own it was flawless for 2yrs but is now sadly giving him some problems.

My daughter owns a V reg. GTV 2ltr. Lusso
It feels quite nice on the road but performance is leisurely. Steering and turn-in is very good as are the brakes.
You MUST listen to it from a cold start. Almost all the ones we looked at had a lot of cam/hydraulic lifter noise when cold and some examples took a fair while to quieten down, one we looked at didn't! The mechanic came out and revved the nuts off it but it was still noisy, by which time we had turned and walked away!
Possible weak points from our experience are - Airflow sensor, rear suspension bushes, corrosion on the (lovely) cloverleaf alloys. (Yours may not have these)
Although it looks nice, drives well, has a super badge! and has a lovely looking dash layout, it is not of the highest build quality.
If it's a bargain - fine, but remember the depreciation?

Pros: Styled by Italians
Cons: Built by Italians
These are quite appealing and decent value but don't expect trouble free motoring. In particualr electricals and bits of trim dropping off / wearing out. Lots of owners reckon the driving experience is good enough to put up with the gripes.

cheers for the replys guys
I did the deal this afternoon, perfect day for it, had the hood down all afternoon, its nice to drive, not the same as the scoob, feels very responsive though. dont feel as confident going round corners anymore, if i could have a topless scoob, i would be in heaven

Nice motor, if I were you I'd get a set of the later bigger five hole rims (similar to those on the 156GTA) they look
on them. The ride would probably be nowhere near as good, but who cares, no one can see you if you're driving quick
