Default P1 or Evo6

OK before anyone starts I currently have a Scooby MY00 WRS (running PPP - full decat etc) and am considering upgrading very soon. So on my shopping list is either a P1 or an Evo6.

So looking for feedback from persons who own or have driven both of these motors.....I am really looking for some advice here I am a big Scooby fan but can't ignore the performance of an Evo6 (out of the box) so to speak. Now I am still at present undecided and don't know whether I could live without the Flat Four Burble etc etc. So I am looking for honest thoughts/experience from others as whatever I go for is gonna be an everyday car rather than a weekend toy.

Cheers WOOOHOOO 1000 posts

Congrat on 1000 posts Nelson.
If I were you, I would go for P1.Not because I am a scooby fan, but because I will have something special - not one of the Evo6.I know that standard scoobs are more common than standard Evos but P1 still remains special and less common with its performance.
If you know the P1 well, you will know what I am talking about.Never mind about the flat4 rumble and grumble !

I had a P1 and loved it, would happily have another, over an Evo 6 anyway.

Now an Evo 6 Makinen edition is another matter, I'd prolly go for the TME, it will keep it's money better, rarer and, come to think of it, I'd quite like one myself.

Anyone want to buy a 330ci clubsport

Hi Nelson.....

Scoobs are great, especially the P1. However, the P1, in the real world, is really not that different to what you have.....in fact, it's just another Scoob to many!

I had a similar dilemma a year ago......went down the Evo route(8FQ-300), with no regrets whatsoever. Evos are the real deal, but cost an arm and leg to run......worth it though.

What about an Evo VII fq-300?.....becoming more affordable now and have the 5-speed box rather than the 6-speeder on the 8

Good luck.....whatever you do, you'll have a brilliant car!!

I've owned both.

Bought an Evo 6, liked it, then the P1 came out and I had to have that because it was supposed to be better. P1 was good, fast and handled well, but soon got bored with it and found it a bit too normal. I realised that I missed the sheer talent, presence, ability and rawness of the Evo, so sold the P1 and bought another Evo VI. Aah, that was better, the Evo was more special to me, rawer, ultimately more capable and nicer inside. The P1 interior I found more flimsy and tinny and acquired more squeaks and rattles as the months passed. I had my Evo for 2 years and even despite the much firmer suspension and many potholed roads, the interior remained as new throughout.

Ultimately, the P1 is a more liveable, if plainer day to day proposition, but the Evo was more satisfying to own and drive and kept it's value much better too!

Don't believe all the rubbish about running costs either. If you like to look after your car, then a service every 3-4K miles should be second nature anyhow, be it P1 or Evo. As for fuel consumption, they both drink the same, it's just the Evo has a smaller tank and over keen fuel guage..

Evo every time!

Mart.

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

Cant say much about an evo as ive only driven one, a version 4. Not impressed at all TBH.

Ive had a P1 for 3 years now and its a fantastic car. Very few cars on the road can match it for road presence, especially if you have gold wheels

I had the benefit of 3 years warranty from subaru, and have recently extended for another 2 years with Subaru. You can return around 300 miles from a tank on the motorway, averaging 250ish for mixed driving. Servicing intervals are longer than that of evos.

Although the P1 may not be as 'involving' to drive than an evo6, Id imagine its more livable day to day, as I know peops with evos.

And of course, the flat floor noise, nice and loud with a blitz exhaust and a full decat

IMHO the P1 is the best special edition to come from IM, bar the uk22b.

I think MJ stirling has hit the nail square on the head.

With regard to specialness, the evo is in a different league, also in terms of driver involvement. The engine is ultimately stronger, and cheaper to maintain should the worst happen.

The noise is a stupid sole reason to choose one car over another. The subaru rumble does not make up for the low down endless torque, the much sharper steering and the most incredible turn in.

Behind the wheel I find the 6 to be in a different league from any P1 I have driven (2).

Modifications to the impreza can even the score on all counts, but if you are comparing standard with standard, there is no decision for me.

What he said.

Although I started with a P1 & then went to an Evo.

Put it this way, I would buy another Evo, but I wouldnt buy another Scoob.

All you need to do is drive one.

Nelson,

Heading down exactly the same route. Have UK97 (circa 300bhp) and fancied the P1 but prices have put me off. At a recent rolling road day realised that a). my car was producing as much power as a P1 anyway and b). thought cosmetically it looked nicer and stood out just as much. (my opinion obviously)

I posted a general query on the Mitsubishi forum and was advised to plum for the TME if I could afford it. Looking at the prices of the Evo 6 though in general they're falling to a nice affordable level. Might just wait until early next year before I start looking for a mint example. The only issue is the insurance.....pay £700.00 now and for an Evo looking at double! (28 years old)

I'm not at all certain of the arguement that an evo 6 will hold it's value better than a p1.

If anything as of late evo values for the equivalent impreza (sti) have been falling noticeably faster, whilst the P1 seems to be levelling out.

Nelson

There are pros and cons for both cars and at the end off the day you have to buy the one that best suits you. I really fancied an EVO and ended up buying a P1 (and lovin' it). The EVO VI was just too hard a ride for everyday driving - bearing in mind I'm doing best part of 20k miles a year and sometimes her indoors has to drive it. If I was doing half the miles and only driving it at weekends then I may have gone for the EVO - but I'm not sure - the P1 has 2 doors also...

Cool

I have had a p1 and had problems after problems ending into rebuilding engine as subaru dealer would not accept the problem of oil pump packing up. I de cated the whole system, and they said warranty void. So cost me £8500 to rebuild. They are great to drive and fun but they start rattling after a while as very tinny and if you lean on it you just created your self a dent!!! but the evo6 is not a bad car, i drive my brother in laws every now and then and that is a tommy mack and that is the real boy's toy, my p1 could not get near it. I personally would stay away from p1 (not knocking it) but had bad experience. Got STI7 now in black and had a few things done to it and now push me brother in laws evo along 150+ all day long.

choice is yours out of two evo6 but STI7or8 is better build quality all round day car hope this helps

Hi Nelson!

A few reasons really, I dont seem to be able to leave my cars alone in terms of making them go faster, which plays a fairly major factor in what I will buy. The Evo's have been proven to be infinately more tunable than the Subaru's for starters.

Other reasons are my car is used maybe once or twice a week, so I wnt the full monty experience, which the Evo delivers in my opinion. I found it so much more focussed.

If it was a daily driver, it would be a lot closer, the Subaru you can live with a lot more easily IMO. You can sit back & drive it sensibly, whereas the Evo just makes you want to drive it hard all the time.

If i'm honest, there is also a bit of snobbery from me, I see SO many Scoobs every day, whereas I am lucky if I see one Evo a week, it's just the bit more exclusive. Plus the P1 looks like every other car, it could be mistaken for any other Scoob at a glance, whereas there is no mistake about an Evo.

I wouldnt buy another Scoob because they don't really do anything for me these days, yes they sound nice, but they have really lost the plot IMO making some real butt ugly monstrosities that weight too much & underperform, but again, Mitsubishi are guilty of this as well - it seems because Subaru have taken thier foot off the gas so to speak, so have Mitsi, I would consider an Evo 7, but thats about it now.

Talking Real life story

Owned a sti 4 type R and evo 6 tme and here's my own thoughts:

speed - evo tme faster from point a to b. proven on track when pitched against my type r. makes me as a bad driver look good. takes corners faster too.

driver involvement- type r has better acceleration but lower top speed, in addition to being rear wheel biased. but evo tme better for motorways and quieter.

looks-both cars generate almost similar stares and smiles. my mum likes the scoob but missus likes the tme so fairly equal.

fuel economy- scoob wins hands down. the tme needs more visits to shell.

maintenance- roughly the same as i service both cars at 4500 miles intervals for approx the same costs.

modifications - both just as expensive for stage 1 mods and suspension upgrades. but brakes as std on evo is better as i needed to upgrade the type r to brembos.

myself? i am the kind who goes for the sheer engine note *shy grin* of the scooby so tme acts as missus' shopping car. i know ppl might think this is funny or even ridiculous but i dont get the buzz of jumping into the evo as i do in the scoob.

guess with the P1's longer gearing, you could see the top end an evo makes.

ah yes, the scoob's interior is easier to take apart for fitting audio stuff as well. did all the work on scoob myself but evo tme seems harder to find the relevant nuts and bolts, so you could argue evo is better manufactured.

i'd personally preferred the scoob's seats. evo is too high up.

hope this helps

Hello lads, il keep it brief, I have owned both, evo IV running 363bhp at flywheel and a P1 on a X plate.

some great comments in this thread.

Most of which are true.

The P1 is an all time absolute piece of mastercraftsman ship

HOWEVER a Mildy tuned EVO which is still very very reliable, is a better propostion, mine was an RS (rally spec) and it was simply outstanding, it broke my heart selling the car, you will not find a faster A to B vehicle and it has an almighty road prescense, EVEN when I had my P1 and a evo passed I held my head in shame.

The P1 is just a little to much Lamb, the evo is almighty.

I now drive a 03 vectra gsi 3.2 v6 LOL

Looking for a evo 6 track car for weekends

Nelson,

I used to own a Sti-1 and I loved the power deliver, handling, etc, scoobs were not that common then, anyway a few years later I purchased a one year old EVO6 from a Mitz dealer, it had under 10 miles on the clock and was almost like brand new.

TBH, I wasn't that impressed by the power and it did not feel that fast, and all I kept think was how much I loved the way the scoob delivered it's punch in the back.

Well, after just two months of ownership and not too hard driving I ended up with AYC problems and all in all it cost just under £5k to sort them, thank god it was still under warranty. The alloys also blistered which Mits replaced with refurbished items.

Now, back onto the drive, I was a little dissapointed so went and test drove a P1, It took just two minutes for me to realise that the EVO was just as quick and far more focused as a drivers car, you real feel more connected with the road than you do driving a scooby.

The power delivery in an EVO is very linear and there is little lag and then it just keeps pulling (with very little drama, unlike the scoobs power delivery), but I was told to fit a filter and exhaust and that would really open it up. Well sold it anyway do to work.

6 months later I brought an Intergra Type R, and that is the most fun I have ever had in a car.

Oh, after the Teg came a Sti5 Type RA V-Limited, nice but still not as raw as the Teg...

I'm not really being fair on the Evo's as I've only ever driven one ( a VII for a quick spin when I had a 310BHP GT-Four and wanted a VII, after the drive I didn't want a VII), but are you looking at a standard P1 or a WR model (remember £ for £ you'll make more time across country round/ round a track with good brakes + handling than you will with more horses), as there is a difference. Also as far as running costs go, any village idiot can work on a subaru, but you need a specialist for Evo rear diffs (frequent oil changes), and clutches ain't all that easy to change either. Make your own mind up and don,t let anyone else put you down for your decision as it's your money and you choose what suits you best. By the way, when you move forward a bit like I did, I bought a 04 WRX SL PPP with PFF7's & STi boot spoiler for the wife instead of a Evo 260 and it still cost me less even with all the Gucci bits on it.

To clear things up lads

RS evo's dont have troublesome AYC

GSR's DO they also have all the posh toys the RS is a drivers car and has none of said items.

Evo's can be pricey to run, 4500 service intervals, clutch costs about £700 fitted

everything else is good as standard though brakes etc.
