Default Renault Clio 172 Cup

Just had a drive in one of these (a mates) and they're suprisingly good! Don't knock 'em till you've tried one!

Not far off a Focus RS in terms of performance and without any torque steer. Doesn't grip as well as my RS around corners, but is still very neutral with little or no understeer. Push harder and the backend will break free allowing controllable slides.

The engine is pretty good with amazing throttle response. Good spread of torque from right down at 1800rpm up to the 7250 limiter.

Lack of ABS means hard braking isn't a great idea, but the controls are generally very good.

Even the build quality is not as bad as people make out.

Aye they are great cars really (didn`t buy mine for build quality...luckily!) You should try one with the rsport ECU m8...limiter is about 7900rpm and 4th gear is good for 125!

Get our second one on Saturday.

I have never driven a tin top that changes direction as quickly!

Should be making 2 trips to the Nurburgring with it this year.....I pray that there are some Impreza going

I'd get a drive in a 106 GTi then...

Had one of these before I got the Cup, not as quick and lacking the grunt of the Clio (smaller engine, less power & torque) but my God, what a superb drive!

Past tense?? What you got now?

Re: the 106 GTI comment I'd recommend if changing direction quickly is your bad drive a MKI VTS. Just bare in mind that you might just change direction against your will

Yup... it's gone matey, sold it a couple of months ago just as the "182 hype" was starting, and got back nearly what I paid for it new!

Was gonna get a 182 with Cup bits on the cheap off my Renault mate again, but ended up with a high revving loaf delivery vehicle!

And he's not the only one!

I'd have another Cup - I wouldn't have the dealers who were, in a word, ****.

CTR, good stuff The really nice thing about the CTR v's the Cup is how much 'sweeter' it feels as a car

The Rallye is even better and more inline with the Cup I reckon, lightweight etc.

Is the initial cup still better than the 182 with the cup chassis set up can anyone tell me?

Cup's have held their value rather well, I thought you'd be able to pick them up for peanuts by now, but not so. A little more gets you a brand new 182 with cup sus?

I'd a agree the CTR is a better all around car, and would bet money they're dealers are better, I looked after my mums clio and the dealers were a bunch of jokers, had to keep going back to Renault to get them to carry out any work under gaurantee! F1ckers! But the point is, you do pay for what you get. CTR is very much more expensive than the Renault.

Test drove the CTR - nice gearbox, not worth 17k and I would have more fun in the Clio.

A clio cup is unbelievable value ..... You are getting a year old car that does 0.60 in around 6.6 seconds for around £10K .... It doesnt run out of steam there either. I had a 183BHP '172 clio' and loved it. I wouldnt have sold it for a WRX for sure.

I'm back on me soap box Dave but I maintain that the cup will lap the 'ring' as quick as your 944 turbo.

Dave .......IMHO you will pull an extra 10 - 15 MPH than my pug through the Kesselchen section + Flugplatz and again on dottinger Hohe. Those whould give you around 20 seconds I reckon and get you lapping in around 8.40 secs. The 944 will pull a little on the straights but the clio will undoutably regain that in the last sections.

and if you cant do it, give me the keys and I will have a go ... lol

Dave, the challenge from MadMark could be interesting, you should accept it. He's never been to the Nürburgring

I would be quicker in a Corsa 1.2 than someone that has never driven the 'Ring in a bug eye scoob.

Has anyone got a 1.2 Corsa I could borrow??

I really enjoyed my Cup, couldnt find anything that came close for the money (new), and the instantaneous throttle response and confidence you have chucking it around bends is hard to get from cars costing lots more.

I do miss that small hatch feeling, and I bought mine from Davis of Sevenoaks, and dealer seemed pretty good, plus never had any probs with it, so cant complain about them at all really.
Insurance seems to have kept them out of the hands of most chavs too, and they really do deserve to become a bit of a hot hatch icon.

Wouldn't be far off in a straightline, never mind The 'Ring

I've been ordered that I must take our car to the Ring - do they let hairdresser TT engined things on?
