Default Girlfriend friendly alternative to an Impreza?

The g/f has told me that there is no way she would drive one. So after years of driving around in a Astra and with the possibility of the company car scheme changing for the better - I need to seek an alternative to my dream car.

Any ideas for a drivers car that does not look like a Impreza/Evo/Type R/etc - but drives just a well and gives you that ear to ear grin when you need it?

Firstly, has she even been in an Impreza to know what they drive like?

I'd encourage her to drive one in order to realise how sedate they can be, and that your granny could quite happily pop to the shops in one.

On-boost is a different matter though!

If she really won't consider one, then how about the Leon Cupra R?

Who wears the trousers anyway?

My best mate ( female) used to love taking my WRX up to 130mph. (Private road)

My nearest and dearest loves the scooby, it was her who made me buy the WR1. Thats my excuse and i'm sticking to it.( We only went to the dealers to look at a Forester for her)

Ur other half should take one for a drive.

If it has to be something else, what does it have to have, can u narrow the type of car down for us?

Personally I would never let a woman influence my choice of car, she has her Clio to call stupid pet names and fill with soft toys

This is very thoughtful, Rev.She might quite like trendy Celica,Focus or Golf etc .Let her make her own choice.Thats the best.

Nissan 350Z looks good. Is it style over substance though?

Chris - am really after a simple driver's car (4wd or Rwd preferred). My first car was a 205GTi, my second car was an Impreza and my third car is an Astra Coupe. Basically I want something more like the former than the latter

dnb - she says she'd refuse to drive it. Thinks "everyone" will laugh at her and that she'd look stupid. The logic of a woman! Her get out of jail free card is that she says "You get one, I know you like them ... I'm just saying I won't drive it". Which drives me nuts (Is this what you call reverse psychology I wonder?) - as it's not like cars grow in trees. Who'd she'd expect to drive if she doesn't? Er, me!

Anyway, I'm not going to get a car that only I would drive. I do enough driving at the moment and I'd want to be able to have both of us drive.

I have to add that she's not passed her test yet. She's not sat in one let alone driven one. Sends me round the bend!

I remember when I passed my test - all I got to drive was my Mums mini-metro. Did you hear my complaining? Well, actually, yes .. but that's not the point - I still drove it.

Legacy B4 Twin-Turbo

Chipped Octavia vRS

2.7 V6 Bi-Turbo S4

RX-8 Hi-Power (Although these seem to be the new fashion accessory like the Audi TT IMO so not exactly subtle/stealthy)

Accord Type R (without big spoiler!?)

M3

M5

How much you looking to spend, how old you prepared to go and if you'd go second hand are you bothered about medium/high mileage. This might help with suggestions.

£25k for a new car. But would consider a low-mileage 2nd hand car - but wouldn't spend £25k on it.

In light of this statement, please disregard every suggestion posted above.

Buy yourself the nicest Scoob you can afford, and get her a £150 runabout till she gets some experience on the road.

You don't want a new driver going straight into a performance car like the examples mentioned above.

If it were me, I'd be dead against her driving my car, no matter what make, if she was still a learner.

It took me years to allow my missus behind the wheel of my pride and joy. She had to earn her stripes!

The best thing about a scooby is driving one, the worst thing is the attention that you get from the little *******, My girlfriend wants me to get rid of my 03 sti because of all the unwanted attention from 15-16yr old thugs.
The car however will be staying!
If anyone knows where to get a reasonably priced cloaking device please get in touch.

Couldn't agree more.... those first 12 months after passing are the shakiest of them all. It'd be lunacy to pilot something with any more than 80-100 brake. If something terrible did happen..... she may never get into a car again.... or possibly worse.

Book her on a skid-car course & she'll be quite happy with a runabout.....

If you still want 4wd with a bit of poke and superb interior (she'll like that)
try out an Audi S3, latest ones are about 03 reg and can be had for around 20k.

£500 chip and youve got 265bhp, very understated looks (she'll like that), get one with heated seats leather seats too (she'll love these), and your onto a winner

only down side is if you need the space of a scooby as the Audi S3 aint big inside and the boot is very shallow also.

Here's a great car for a newly-passed test.....

....anything with the VW-group 1.4 TDI PD engine!!

Drove a Polo courtesy car the other month; it was a total hoot!
Just 75 bhp, but MASSES of torque for such a wee car..... 50+ to the gallon, and cheap insurance.

Stick the £££ saved into a high interest account (they're getting better!)
& then she can get a brand new Scoob in a year or two..... They'll probably all have DCCD by then

I would have thought that the major problem if you want something nice and she's inexperienced is INSURANCE!

Perhaps cheaper for the next few years is to have what you want and a cheap(ish) runaround for her until the NCB builds up.

But FFS don't try to understand female logic, you'll either fry your brain or be asymilated

eyeMAJIC's quote is quite true, the 3 cylinder 75 BHP engines r a laugh, more than ok for someone who has just passed their test. My other half has one in a Polo and although she now wants a Forester a year ago she thought the Impreza was too big for her to drive.

A cheaper, smaller car may be better to start off with to boost her confidence.

I have to agree with talizman. Buy her something cheap and nasty to drive / wreck after passing her test and enjoy the Scooby yourself. When she has more experience and ready for a better car she will also hate the heap she is driving and be delighted to drive a turbo. .......Easy Life!

I guess it depends on what type of girlfriend you have as to if they would want to be driving/be seen in an an impreza. If your girl has any class then she wouldn't be seen dead in one. The majority or girls see them as ugly, evil. Sort of a modern day Sierra Cosworth.

If however, your girlfriend is a chav, (shell suit, large gold earrings etc etc) she will probably love it. Would be a step up from the Nova's she's used to.

(not slating imprezas btw, I think there great cars, just awful to look at)

Cool

Who is paying for the insurance? You or the company?

If its you then the insurance Co will make your mind up for you - most won't touch a person with less than 1 years experience under their belt no matter what the age in any type of performance car.

And those that do will hike the premium so much it'll be more cost effective getting her a cheap runaround to compliment the car of your choice.

I'd tell her she lost the right to choose a car based on material looks - purely based on the fact she couldn't be arsed to pass her test and fork out for running a car for the last <insert No.> years

How long have you been sheeing her for? may be time for a new model, and I'm not talking about chopping in the Astra

So if we Impreza drivers are "chavs", what make and model do you drive and what does it make you?
Going by your (out of order) comment, you obviously have each marque's driver pigeon-holed so accurately??
