Default 738lb ft...

On Saturday, I had the pleasure of driving one of these for the day:

It's the new S65 AMG, with a V12 biturbo (as it says on the front wings)

612 bhp
738 lb ft (1000Nm)
2200kg
0-60 4.4s

Incredible piece of equipment. You have a stop pedal and a 'go go go' pedal. As Evo magazine say this month, you boot it at 125mph on the motorway - and the traction control light flickers. It has twice the torque of a Gallardo...

Foot down hard at any speed and it just goes. Come in to a corner and the electric seat bolsters squeeze you slightly on the correct side to support your enormous executive bulk as you waft around the bend (so, on a left hand bend the right side bolster moves in slightly, and vice versa).

Cruise control has 'distronic' - so you set the speed, and it cruises at that speed - until something gets closer infront than a preset distance, at which point it slows down. When the slower moving vehcile moves over, or you wake up and lethargically turn the steering wheel to shift lanes, it speeds up again.

More buttons, gadgets, gizmos than your average spaceship... and the closest you can get to warp factor 9.

Fun!

Holy Moly

And there's me thinking that the 600lb/ft that the usual Bentley has was a kick in the seat!!

Finally, proof that the Germans have a sense of humour.

They take a 6+ litre V12. And then do a twin-turbo job

Remember that it is electronically limited to 738 lb/ft. Once they get the 7G 7 speed autobox strenghthened, they can open the taps up and they're talking of over 800 lb/ft.

That's 800.

In a four door saloon.

Me want. Me want a lot.

How much does it cost to brim it with Optimax (when the chauffeur has to fill it up for you)?

Same engine, different car. Merc do this stonking motor in the CL (2 door coupe) S (4 door saloon) and SL (2 door conv with the folding metal top). Around 160 big ones each. There was one of each in the Merc display at Goodwood (if you include the SLR and the Maybach, the entire display was worth about £1.5m for 10 cars).
