Default What's the ISOFIX for ?

Hi all,

With junior on the way, I've just ordered a car for the missus that's much safer, easier to drive etc. Thing is, it has ISOFIX points in the rear seats for baby seats.

I'm sure I'd think it was a good thing, if I knew what it was

So, erm, what are they ? And how do they work ?

Ta

See here

It supposed to make fitting a child seat to a car idiot proof. I have no experience, so cannot say if it is or not

Cheers

ISO is the International Standards Organisation, and I believe the idea behind ISOFix is that it's a standard for child seats, so you know that any ISO marked child seat should fit safely and securely in any ISO car.

My bro-in law's car has this in. It's a much better/safer system than relying on an inertia reel mechanism that's designed to restrain a large adult.
We fixed the seat into my sisters car using an old 4 point harness, as the seat belt didn't appear capable of retaining it in the event of a serious 'off', and the seat won't be removed until satan's daughter is old enough not to need one.

You should definitely get a child seat which uses the ISOFIX fittings to locate the child seat. There are too many child seats which are not securely fitted in vehicles and therefore don't provide the protection that the parents think. ISOFIX provides properly engineered mounting points and it is a doddle to install the seats securely. It's a no brainer !

However.....

We are at the first stage with ISOfix, with two mounting points at the base, but this means in the event of an impact the seat (with child) will try to pivot forward on these, so the seat base has to be firm, several cars with ISOfix mountings has been failed when testing by ROSPA.

There is a 2nd level, can't recall where is using it (germany perhaps?) where there is a third top mounting point, so that it is much more secure.
