Unhappy BMW 525 TDS Question

Hi all.

I recently bought an E34 525tds. It has an automatic gear box and I'm having trouble with the gear display window on the dash... you know the one that tells you what gear you've selected and whether you're in Economy, sport or snow mode.

What's happening is that first thing in the morning it displays fine, but when the engine gets to normal working temperature, the display first goes dim and eventually you can't see anything unless you look at it sideways.

I've tried cleaning the switch that the shifter joins onto but that didn't do anything.

Has anyone had any problems with this, maybe you could shed some light on it?

Thanks!
