Default Metro 6R4

anyone remember these things?? imagine one on the road, talk about kick the *** of absolutely everything out there

here is a write up i found

Rover mounted its biggest ever challenge on the World Rally Championships in 1985 with the debut of the Metro 6R4. Following a multi-million pound development programme, the Patrick Head-designed 410 BHP rear-engined V6, capable of 0 - 100 in 4 seconds, carried Rover’s hopes of real success. With top drivers Tony Pond, David Llewellyn and Colin McRae at the wheel, the 6R4 became a familiar sight at some of the most gruelling of rallies.

Remember? They're still regular sights on tarmac (and the occasional gravel) rallies Andy.

Now, my memory of the mid eighties is hazy at best, but the one thing I'm pretty certain of is that CMR never drove one at World Championship level. He wasn't even rallying Novas at the time Group B was banned!

The Rs200 had traction problems otherwise it would be as fast or faster than the 6r4, saw JC driving one in one of his videos

Did you know the 6R4 engine was further developed and ended up powering the Jag XJ220 ?

Turbo version (ex Will Gollops car) competes in the Midlands Hillclimb championship. Very quick car, around 750-800bhp. Been out in it (on an airfield). Fastest thing I've ever been in, well, fastest acceleration anyway.

Videos etc. on Powerstation's site.

Cheers

The 6R4 was a bit of a failure at WRC level - possibly as ARG went with a non-turbo motor as opposed to the opposition's (Lancia, Ford, Audi etc) 2litre turbo : not sure what power the 6R4 produced (400bhp maybe) but the turbo motors would be producing a fair bit more than that. They do sounds ab-sol-ute-ly fantastic and if you get the chance to see one at a rally these days then go and witness a fabulous sounding car.

Funnily enough there's a 6R4 being rallied somewhere around the UK with a Sierra Cosworth turbo engine in it. Bl**dy weird when you see it coming, but just don't associate the noise with it. It's almost like your head thinks the 6R4 is completely silent, and there's a turbocharged car following a few metres behind it!

The was(is?) also a guy running one with a V8 in it on the BTRDA gravel events, and again it just doesn't seem right. Noise just doesn't match the car.

Andyr: IIRC they managed to get about 460bhp out of the engine immediately before the ban, but, as you say, this was of little consequence when the Audi's (in particular) and Peugeots were producing the thick end of 1000 horsepower...

I have driven a reasonably standard 6R4 on track and have to say I was a bit dissapointed with it. I am sure a GPB spec car would fly but it just did not do anything for me, handling was not up to much in the wet either - not very progressive - but I would not say no to a go in 800bhp version

Since we are talking about 80s rally cars a short wheel base audi quattro would be nice

And to think we get excited by current WRC cars producing circa 300bhp (ok they've got piles of torque tho') : towards the end of Grp B the direction might have been towards Group S : remember reading a CCC article where Lancia were rumoured to be looking to using a version of their F1 engine : Mad but might have been interesting to see !
Still have vids showing the SWB Quattro Sport lifting the front end over the 1000 lakes yumps. Also Rohrl driving the Quattro (in Greece IIRC) showing his footwork : he's either hitting (literally hitting it seems, not just pressing !) the accelerator or hitting the brake, nothing inbetween it seems. Crowds parting as he approached with this 500bhp+ car barely under control.

A 6R4 at full chat is music to a rally fan's ears.

the rs200 evolution actually had a 0-60 of 2.1 secs, now that's quick. 100 was 6ish secs and had about 650bhp

The thing with a 6R4 is its sheer presence. Its a purpose built rally/competition car. Nothing else. The sounds is fantastic - can often be heard from the other side of an airfield screaming its way to 12k revs.

They are allowed 2 different versions now - 2.8 single plenum and 2.5 multiplenum motors with the 'proper' engine rebuilds giving circa 330-350bhp costing (so Ive been told) 12-15k with a 6 month waiting list! The bext cars are around 60-80k to purchase and on an airfield (or some tarmac events) will put the WRCs to shame.

Paul..

Nothing beats the sound of a 6R4 on full chat, have very happy memories of standing in Ogre hill on the RAC and Tony Pond coming down hill through the mist.......................................

I think the 205 T16 or delta S4 have more of a claim to being the daddy going by how many championships they won between them.
