Golf 110 Diesel
A mate of mine is looking to buy a 98 Golf MK4 Diesel. Its the 110BHP model TDi. UK car with a good spec.
Its hit 90,000 no accidents, marks or any bad history. Spec is Heated seats, climate control, metallic black, VW alarm.
I've been told its had a new turbo, new exhaust.
Does anybody know of any problems with the seats, air con or anything else that could be troublesome?
Price is 5895. Good Deal?

VW aircon & electrics are normally very reliable. I'd be suspicious about the new turbo -- the original failure could have put bits into the motor as well.
Also seems VERY pricey -- £6K for a 6-year old Golf with the old-spec non-PD diesel. How does it compare with the Parkers Guide prices?

Brickboy,
That sounds about right for that age and mileage of car. These models do hold their value very well, and recently at an auction that John Felstead attended they were fetching above book.
I'd be wary of the turbo replacement as you say, but depends on who replaced it and what warranty the part has etc.
My other half has well spec'd 3dr GT TDI 110 with 62k miles on the clock and we'd expect to get £7.5-£8k for that in a private sale.

Brickboy,
I think that most things are better investments than pensions at the moment! LOL The Golf just seems to hold it's value. I'm sure that when the Mk5 is more common and some come onto the 2nd hand market, the Mk4 will drop a little, but not too much. Look at Mk3's. They still do relatively well, especially in TDi form.
Hannah (other half) has had her car for 18 months now and loves it to bits. It's had one or two issues, such as dodgy electric window runners which have both been replaced and the original battery just gave up. Still, nearly 6yrs from a battery is not bad! It has all the toys she needs, a/c, electric everything, heater seats etc and does 45+mpg. A great little car!
