A3 Turbo or WRX... help?

After years of "not getting round to it", I'm really keen to get into Track Days. Been on a couple at Castle Coombe and I'm hooked! The season starts in March and between now and then I want to buy a Track Day car... but what??!
My everyday car is an Audi A4 1.8T Cabriolet which has been -remapped giving it just over 200BHP and I love it to bits. I love the whole Audi thing, the design, build and the strong little engine that (when not under warranty etc) you can do so much with.
However, before getting my current Audi I was going to get a WRX with Pro Drive Performance Pack. What a beast! But as an everyday car that I use for work etc, it was a bit too hardcore, and when comparing it to an Audi, the interior finish was put to shame. But after the test drive I was hooked on the power and grip.
So, armed with about £5,000 to £6,000 to spend on a Track only car, what should I buy? I'm torn between two cars. I can afford a 1998 Audi A3 1.8T Sport or I can buy a '95 WRX from the Japanese Import Car Auctions and still money to spare on modifications.
I'm worried about buying a smokey, thrashed old scooby. What should I do?

Yeah, if its a track day 'only' car, I'd personally, from experiance, say go for a '7type' car as si_kosta comments. Very cheap to insure, modify, tax, REPAIR, compared to scoobys and audi's. Also you will learn to drive properly, (flamesuit on) anybody can make easy work of chuckin a scooby around a track(yes, I have had one too), they drive thereself. Can't comment on audi as I never drove one. I'm not saying a scoob is'nt fun on a track, it certainly well is, but you feel 'connected to the car' when you are sitting 2 inches from the track no, PAS, no ABS, just a rod connecting 'you' to the wheels. I'd try and have a blast in one before you spend your hard earned on a track toy, other people will no doubt have different opinions, but keep your options open before you try.

I have to say that for a track-day-only car, I wouldn't spend £6k on a high mileage A3 1.8T ... unless Jabba sport want to give it 350bhp and then you will need a quattro at £11k+

Have to agree, your choice of 'track cars' is wrong wrong wrong. A3 is the worst of the two though. How about an older Golf, spend some money on suspension etc and have some left over?
