Changing BMW coil packs

Its really easy, take off the cover on the top of the engine and the coils sit directly over the plug cavities. How do you know they need replacing?
p.s. I have a feeling they are quite expensive!

Its not my car its a mates. He took it to BMW and they diagnosed it as 1 damaged coil pack (engine was missing on full boot), and quoted £425 fitted as they need to replace all 6.
We have found a place that sells them independantly for £80 ish for 6 new packs so I said we should do it ourselves.
Is it a simple plug and play thing then - swap old for new?
