In a few months, me & the g/f will need a 2nd hand car to 'share' and would appreciate some recommendations.
Will be getting a 2.0l Westfield in addition for my bit of fun so don't need anything blisteringly fast as the 'share' car. Basically it will be her car but I'll use a fair bit so want something 'special'.
The car will need to do the the following
- commute the g/f 300 miles or so a week.
- be a decent size ( I want omega size but that's too big apparently according to the g/f) so something that will be both big and small ? She drives a Micra at the mo and likes the idea of an A3 but I want something bigger (A4 size maybe?) - Basically a 4 door saloon/hatch.
- Need to have a bit of go
- Preferably RWD or 4WD but I guess these types will be too £££ so FWD will be considered
- Be comfy and have a nice interior (so no scoobies!!)
Budget £6k or so, less would be good

Selling my Alfa if you're interested. It's a good 'un!

Alfa 156 or an A3. You'd be surprised at the room in an A3. The boots big for a hatch. The 3 door is a bigger car than a 5 door Golf. Leather interior and the 1.8T (turbo) is a nice combination and available within your budget. Engines are good for 200k.

Auto Trader. I've just got one for just over 6k. Admittedly it has £3,250 worth of AMD stuff fitted and new 18" alloys (Konis, Eibachs, TT brakes, EBC pads and discs, engine remap). That was already on the car and included in the purchase price.
I'm quite impressed having come from 3 Scoobs. It also has leather interior, Bose concert system, full climate, etc... Absolutely full service history with 2 owners. R reg.
Try http://www.autotrader.co.uk and search for A3 using 1.8 as a keyword. Don't use 1.8T as the turbos will show up anyway and not all turbos have the T show up in a search function. Otherwise put the word leather down as the keyword. That's how I found mine as it was actually miss-typed and entered as an A3 1.0.
Widen the search to national. Don't be shy to travel for a bargain.
You will find several 97 - 99 cars for that kind of money. Most will be circa 60k - 80k miles. Nothing to be afraid of with a service history. As mentioned the engines will go to 200k without problem.
There were about 12 cars in the price range which matched my requirements, then the one I bought popped up and I nabbed it the same day.
Remember, it may be advertised at £6,500 but 90% of people will price a car higher than the figure they will accept (which annoys me - I like to advertise my car at the price I would like to get but human nature is to knock people down).
I've had it for going on 4 weeks and I'm still very happy with it which is surprising for me. 30 years old and it's my 36th car.
