Hi all, a couple of youngsters i know have got daddy to buy them CTR (they are bearly 18) anyway one of them swears blind that his type r hit 157 mph on a down hill section, i told him that most speedo's 'overread' when travelling over 100mph but he wont hav any of it.

What is the real top speed of these cars i thought 145 was? i guess only gps would tell us its real top speed!

thanks

Hondas official top speed is 146 mph. Based on the gear ratio figures, if you could get it round to the redline in 6th, then you would be doing 160.

I have a vid of a CTR about 3ft from an M3 doing over 155 mph, the M3 was hitting it's limiter.

I bet you are all civic drivers then?????... what im trying to say is that are speedo's inaccurate when travelling at high speeds?, i thought that they can over read by 10% when travelling at high speeds????

On the photos posted its displaying 150?mph BUT are you really doing that speed or is it the speedo over reading!! only gps would clear that up methinks!

arent jap cars limited to 155mph anyway?

Does it really matter that much ?!

Tell the mate swearing that 157 is the true downhill top speed that a 130bhp diesel could do similar on a long enough downhill
straight as the gearing would allow it. You'd just need time.

A true 145'ish is good enough for anyone surely ?

I think manufacturers of modern cars 'dial-in' an element of safety, so the speedo's read too fast (at least in Europe). My GPS measures my speed consistently 3-4mph less than the speedo indicates. (I believe older cars may well be inaccurate by a percentage of the speed, so are 7mph too slow at 70, and 15mph out at 150).

tell him to go up the hill, see what he gets it up to then say the average between the two is about right, bet he won't go over 125mph up it.

Jap cars are limited to 110mph.

M3s only hit their limiter as a mph limiter, not the rev limiter.

When I did the 'back straight' at Bruntingthorpe in my CTR with the GPS linked up it was displaying just under 150 when the GPS was reading 138 if that helps.

Ever wondered why everyone (well almost everyone) drives at an indicated 70mph when there's a Motor Way Police Patrol Car around? ..... With this near universal 10% speedometer reading error in mind, I usually pass the cop car at an indicated 77mph and thus start to pull away from other cars sticking to the indicated 70 which is probably around a true 64. Been doing this for many years without problem. Did so recently on the M5 southbound in Somerset on one of those extensive level long straights and steadily put a large gap between me and all the other cars synchronising their speed with the patrol vehicle. Someone in a newish higher spec Mondeo decided he'd stretch his luck rather more and leaving the police car and and all their travelling companions, soon came alongside me and then passed and drew away, now at well over the 70mph. All this time I had one eye on the rear view mirror and even at some distance, could easily pick out that White Police car which had a very distinctive tint to its lights. Couple of miles later noticed those same Police lights coming up sharpish with me still around 77mph indicated. By this time, having pulled well clear, I had the motorway to myself and was in the nearside lane (never been a Middle Lane HOG!) as most of the cars had stayed at the same speed as the Patrol car until it speeded up. Police car goes by like a 'dose of salts' although for one moment it looked as though he had slowed a little (cold shiver then until I realised not slowing for me after all.... ). Kept my steady cruise speed and a few miles later saw the Mondeo stopped on hard shoulder with Police car all lights blasing away ..... "You're nicked sunshine" ....

Many car owners fit different spec/lower profile tyres which if these reduce the rolling circumference even a little, will give an even greater exaggerated speedo reading .... so 80mph indicated could in reality be less than a true 70mph.

Just my two-penneth ...

...... and that CTR 150 speedo reading? Doing somewhere approaching near a true 140 I would bet! ..

Or, was it on blocks ...

I once, repeat once only had my Tomcat fully round the clock and still building speed slowly in 5th. Never hit limiter in 5th but have done so in lower ratios ... rarely. On those long downhill stretches which seem to go on forever, provided there's a strong following wind (important that) most cars will give their fastest speedo readings.

The previous owner of my car was stopped on the M3 and the police told him his speed was 132 mph. Far from flat out, he had only taken up the slack in the throttle cable apparently... By the way, that cost him a hefty fine and 6 months ban. All that for doing something which was perfectly legal when I drove on the Motorways for the first time back in the 1960s. Great days ... gorn forever in today's namby-pamby world....You can keep all your modern gizmos....Youngsters today ... don't know they'ze born ...
