After enjoying 5years with my WRX, I was thinking of swapping for something a little better screwed together and slightly less frantic (getting old!) but with at least some of the subarus performance.
I was thinking of the M5 a couple of years old (ie v8 5ltr)
anyone with any comments on car good or bad?

Try and obtain a back copy of EVO (about 5 moths ago) where they focused on buying second hand M5's in detail. Lots of great info in there.

Cheers

My parents had a 540i a few years back and loved it, traded it in against a lexus and regretted it ever since.

The 540 is a bit more floatty and executive than the M, but still highly recomended as you can get them for considerbly less cash and if they have the sports suspension ect it is still a very capable car.

I've got a 2001 M5 and IMHO it is the perfect car, cruises at a ton with out any wind or road noise and when you want to it can show a P1 a thing or 2 on a race track. The only problem is how much money their losing due to a new model M5 being released late next year, still I've no regrets!!

Thanks Dom,
Any downsides apart from depreciation? Any options that you would definitely look for/avoid? Any advice generally on buying one?
Had heard the Vanos system goes after about 60K miles?

Great car but be aware of the oil consumption, on average 1 ltr per 1000 miles.
Its not a problem as such as BMW have done extensive testing to prove its just one of them things.

The Vanos was a problem on the earlier cars as was the oil consumption, all 'face lift' cars shouldn't have these problems. I'm not 100% sure when the 'face lift' version was introduced, but they will have the Halo head lights and the wide screen TV/monitor.

My car has not had to have the oil topped up and I've done 10K miles in 12 months, also the vanos would be changed under warrenty. The main thing to look for is spec. the best spec'ed cars cost a premium as do the best coloured cars.

In other words you can get a cheap yellow one with no telly, sat nav etc!!!

Go and try one you won't be disappointed!!

Ask MattOz, Harj and ChinnyBloke on here - they have all got experience of the type of M5 you mention.

I've been a passenger in the M5 ChinnyBloke had, and it was awesome. To be expected though, with 400bhp on tap! Gorgeous interior, great handling, and great noise too.

Might be wise to hold out for buying one if you can, as there is a new version on the cards, that will surely force the prices of the current version down.

The one in the for sale section is a beauty!

I love mine and can't stop modifying it!!!! SuperCharger coming soon!!!!!

Actually don't buy the one for sale on this bbs as I don't want Tin to sell his as he'l only regret it LOL

Best 4 door car that money can buy, get one then mod it a little and you'l never look back, these cars will put a smile on your face everytime you get into it.

I love winter and I love DSC off

The BMW isnt as fast as my Evo 7 FQ300 but the build quality is great. Nice and comfy inside too.

Scrappy a nice one with a couple of minor mods ie breathing will surely outdoo most EVO's and Scoobs? Never tried it but wouldn't mind sometime at Brunters. Its the mid range on these cars which makes them so powerful, 50mph onwards and they are lethal.

Last time we put mine up against the fastest Caterham in the country there (0-60=3.2s) was awesome as I killed him after 100mph LOL no gearing for the caterham LOL

I will wait for my EVO7 to be SVA'd and then i might give it a go with the M5.

Hi harj, i raced a mildly tuned one over the standard spec and still almost went into the back of him, well past 100mph. Had to use my brakes twice hehe!!!

I see what your saying. The M5 has 400bhp+ and my car has just over 300bhp. Just imagine if i started modifying my car. 50bhp more and my car would destroy the M5, 100bhp more and well, it doesnt bear thinking about.

All in good fun tho eh?

Hi Scrappy

Your probably right mate, but the beemer just makes it feel so much smoother big arm chair with all the toys LOL

Im still waiting for a Super Charger conversion on mine which will push it to 650hp then it should get interesting

Bring the EVO with 400bhp against the SC M5 and it should be fun! Wait for the Scooby Shoot out as ive entered mine pending mods.

I agree with the smoother bit as my dad drives a beemer and its great for long journeys and its delivery of grunt.

I will take you up on your challenge also depending on mods however my mate should have around 400bhp by then (evo6). It will be a laugh.

I bet the conversion will be really great. The only problem as far as i can see is putting all that power down on the rear wheels. Once moving it should be devastating though.

Hi jono

Ive been told by one SC company that they will alter the cars traction abilities to compensate with power to tarmac, will have to wait and see what they come up with.

Such a shame these things are so expensive to modify! SC cost could be the cost of a good P1 Doh!

Oh well its good to be different if the Bank of England allow it LOL Might have a wip round from my mates LOL

Cool

They are mega expensive to modify mate but just think when its done. zzzzzzzzzooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!! lol!!

Bader23: 0-100mph?

Um... im not to sure to be honest. In some magazine if i recall rightly i remember see-ing 11 secs, but i dont really believe some of the figures. It also quoted top speed for the FQ300 as 158mph. Huhh!! I dont think so.. wink wink!!! Had a recent race with an E46 M3 and to my surprise i started pulling away from him and he was really gunning it as i had my window down whilst he attempted to get past. I still would like an M3 though as they are really comfy inside and look the part but for the time being i will stick with my evo and spend abit on modifying her methinks.

i think alot of M3 drivers are actually pussies and they tend to lift off when the going gets hot....

they are quick but they arent THAT quick

LC creams them.

mind you the evo has got more than enough to beat most cars on decent a-roads nevermind motorways.

you'd beat me but then again i won;t risk my licence

Hopefully mods will be done in time for this event when ever it is, should be cool seeing 200mph on the speedo of the V8 providing theres enough space

Hi Tin,

I'm find thank you, no more mods on the M5 apart from a second set of alloys which I've had powder coated to a very dark grey and will be fitted with some 'cup' tyres ready for the track next year!!!

I will also be having the brake cooling fitted as I went through 3 sets of disc's last year and I skimmed 2 of them!!! The only bad point on the M5 is the brakes which are find on the road but not so good on the track.

Who's was this exactly? The fastest recorded Caterham in the country does 0-150mph in 13secs - so I doubt very much you'd "kill it" above 100mph. In fact you'd only just have reached 100mph by the time the Caterham maxed out

My LC will do 0 - 100 in 10.6

by the time the evo got to 100 i'd be doin almost 115 and by the time he got to 120 i'd be doin 150 and all the way nicely on to 176+

licence permitting

Thats the ticket DavyBoy...

the caterham will be back to 0 from 100 before the evo has even got there...

christ my near 2 tonne LC would be 4 seconds down on him to 0..

0 - 100 - 0 15.9 secs

a sobering thought

davyboy,

When I said fastest, I meant "fastest" - not factory fastest. Get my drift?
