bmw, speed related vibration ?

Question

my wifes 94 bmw 525 has developed a speed related vibration, comes in around 55 mph, gone around 65 mph, any ideas ?

Not BM specific but choose from

Wheels require balancing (Most likely)
Tyre problems.
Wheel Bearings on way out
CV Joint problems
Steering column problems

etc
etc
etc

i will have to check to see if any of the weights have come off, it had 4 new tires just before my wife bought it, was fine but the vibe seems to appeared in the last week

Our E39 535 had this. At 45-50mph, odd really, as it stopped when you went faster!

It's a known issue with them as BMW issued a TSB - and increased the wheel nut torque levels. So make sure the torque settings used are the current ones and not the old (lower) ones.

Had the tyres re-balanced and wheels torqued correctly and in the correct sequence (diagonally), making sure they were correctly aligned on the hub.

Seems to have cured it

Very common problem on E34's. The usual term is shimmy and it is always between 55 and 65 mph.

The usual causes are:

simple wheel balancing
Upper control arm hydraulic bushes worn. (Rear arm)
Dampers worn.

She mite of run it up a kerb or something, likely to cause wheel balance to be thrown out.

wheel baring, is a must, had god knows how many go over the last few months!
