Came up against a Golf R32 on the way home tonight. I tried to undertake him and when he just booted it. At the next set of lights he got a slight head start but I did catch him up within a split second. I gave up because I was doing 32mph in a 30 and as I respect the law/speedlimits I decided to slow off and let the guy take the glory.

Fast car mind.... what spec are they?

Give me an Sti and I'm sure I would have whooped his ***..!

Cheers

242bhp.....so i should imagine they are fairly quick, but as with any golf i should imagine that they are just as uninvolving!!

They are 237 bhp actually

Mine has an AmD remap and Milltek exhaust with trick front pipe (now sounds a bit Porsche flat6, a bit M3 and a bit NASCAR ) , it put out 271.5 bhp on AmD's rollers two weeks ago.

I reckon it is probably almost as quick as my old STi Type UK PPP cross country.

PS - they are the only Golf that *is* involving

'A bit Nascar' I know exactly what you mean by that as I was walking the dog yesterday and a MkIII VR6 presumably with a trick exhaust etc went past me at full pelt on the dual carriageway.

It sounded 'Nascartastic' so the R32 must sound unbelievable !

I have an 03 WRX PPP and test drove one of these recently just out of interest. Felt quick but not as quick as mine. On a cross-country thrash I don't think there would be much in it.

Nice car, well built, great interior, etc, etc. Horses for courses though as when I got back into my scoob I knew I had bought the right car.

Others will feel differently.

Oh and the sales guy (kid) was going on and on about the exhaust note of the R32. Didn't think it was any better than the noise my PPP backbox makes in reality.

The standard R32 exhaust is weedy sounding, and has a horrible droning resonance at around 2500rpm - pretty poor of VW not to have tuned it out

Luckily the Milltek cures both

And if we are getting all nostalgic, I had both an '89 1.6 205 GTI and a '92 1.9 205 GTI - now THERE are involving hot hatches

nice solid looking motors too..
had a play with one last night on M42 northbound..
pretty quick.. I reckon he was taking it easy as when I dropped down to 3rd for a swift bit of overtaking ( he was in middle lane) and went for full boost in 3rd and fourth he was WAY behind..
(he had overtaken me earlier on at 120+)

if I could afford it- I'd have one (only if I HAD to sell the Scoob )

Went from a 90 1.6 Pug GTI to 92 Escort RS with a 197 bhp BBR chip and some suspension mods. Pug was fun but under powered and "twitchy" especially in the wet RS was so rapid for its day, 1/4 mile times around the 15 secs dead 10 years ago!
No match for a scooby though!
Cars are all too heavy now!
"Works" mini cooper more in the spirit of it all now IMHO!

bobby H, the reason i said that it was "probably" uninvolving was because that all the newer golfs have electronic everything, throttle control, steering etc, just means that you get very little feedback from the car,

I drove the 1.8T GTI a few months back and even though the wheels were slipping on a corner the steering was just as light as normal, its a very refined car, but not really much on driver involvement, almost felt, too safe?

dont get me wrong, theyre nice cars if you like it like that, and the TDI's are fantastic, i just hope that they made the R32 more of a drivers car i suppose.

I had some trouble keeping up with an R32 when coming off a r'about recently in the wet. However, this was more down to my front (worn) tires not gripping as well as his newer ones me thinks. Once we got on the straight then I caught up with him no bother (mine is an 01 WRX with PPP).

Anyways, I had an R32 demonstrator recently for a couple of days as I'm in the market for a new company car. Heres what I liked and disliked on the R32:

Likes:

1. Interior/driving position, great supporting seats
2. Exhaust note, especially when rev'ed
3. Had tons of torque on any gear. Could pull away easily in 2nd
4. Changes direction quickly and smartly. You can really through it into corners. Reminded me of my old Mark 1 Golf GTI which was bags of fun.
5. Looks great, especially with 3-doors

Dislikes:

1. Almost too noisy sometimes
2. Its just another Golf. Was in a line of four Golfs at one point and although the R32
3. Nannying traction control - although you can turn it off

I've got to admit is was a fantastic drive. I even got up at 4am one morning to give it a spin on some quieter roads. It would give my WRX a hard-time. Decided not to go for it in the end but more because of the fact its a Golf than anything else!!!...and my heart is with Subaru

Had an R32 before getting my STI. In fact had about 8 or so Golfs in a row before my STI (Mki through all the models). Dont be fooled about VW quality, its not what it used to be. Also I would agree that the R32 is an involving drive. But not on the same planet as an STI, particularly steering. The rear suspension (like all golfs except the MKV) crashes over the smallest obstacle, very quick and smooth motor car spoilt by poor build and paint quality. But I'm glad I changed, Would I go back ? No chance...

AS with all good or great cars first model is always the best. Cant beat the mark 1 for fun. Ok slow by todays standards but bloody great fun. Why do all cars have to get fatter and heavier as the models progress?
1. Make a great car.
2. Make it refined.
3. Make it safe.
= Boring.

Came up behind one of these cruising towards the motorway the other night. Coming off the roundabout onto the motorway he booted it. I gave him a second or 2 and then booted my STi. I was up his **** before you know it. He pulled over and let me past (upto about 120 mph by now) Coming to the next intersection I slowed down to 75 and made him slow down as well (he was now right up behind me) He then followed me round the roundabout and back down the motorway, boy was he pissed! There fast but cannot keep up with a Sti full de-cat!

Hi M8

Yes, but where can they be hosted these days?

Yes, the Milltek removes the horrible resonance of the standard system. I can't speak for a standard Milltek because mine is a special (front pipe without resonator box) and fairly noisy (but bloody good sounding ).

DTS, send them over to me, I'll host.

swells (at) nildram . co . uk

anti spam address.

Always liked the look of these, extreme and subtle at the same time.

A bit more practical than the VX at this time of year no doubt.

Build quality in a different league than the Scoob no doubt, what about the dealers ?

Edit - Just noticed Chris's offer of hostage.
