How about a MK2 Golf Gti- 40+mpg, cheap insurance (cheapish) and reliable as a tax increase on petrol come budget time.

I had an L reg ZX 1.9TD Avantage for a couple of years, and that was very good on economy - not too slow either. I used to get 45+ mpg from it, and a bit more if I adhered to limits on longer trips.
Cheaper to maintain than some of the other Citroens, as there is no complicated air-suspension etc.
