Hi
My better half has an Alfa 147 (just over 2 years old, the car not the girl) and I have noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine when the car is started. I have done the basics, checked the fluid levels, belts are clear. Could any clever people out there help as I know bugger all about engines.

Hydraulic tappets... it takes a few seconds for the oil to circulate around them when you start the engine. If it goes on for any longer than that theres something wrong with them, or you've got oil pressure problems.

I will have some idea now of what the problem may be if I need to take it to the dealers.

The variator (think that is spelt right) makes a ticking noise when its gone to, IIRC. It will probably just be the tappets though
