My brother has got two:

1990 H plate which he uses daily and a 1991 J plater, one of the last built and only has 8000 miles on it. Has had them for the last 7 or 8 years saying that they will eventually go up in value, I guess he's finally right.

Have to say that never used to like them that much, but I am growing to like his red H plater.

Whats amazing about these cars is that although they're pushing 20 years old theres only a handful of modern cars that are capable of out performing them. Awesome.

I didnt have the Turbo version of the quattro but still it was a fantastic drivers car.
If I rated the chassis (Note not outright grip as these are two different things) of the cars I have owned then the quattro would come first followed by the scooby.

Right, lets all jump into the time machine and go back 20 years to view the quattro.
Firstly most road tests were comparing it with the supercar Porches and Ferraris of the day as at that time there was literally was no comparison.
Brakes were mainly limited by the size of the wheels available at the time,(15") no 17"&18" rims back then, handling, I think it won the WRC twice, so not much argument there then.
It can't really compete with modern day cars like the current STI's/evo's of today, 20 years is a long time in car development. But the truth is that without the quattro I very much doubt these cars would ever have existed. You have to give it respect as the true original ground breaking car it was.
Plus I like the look of 'em!!

I used to get mine serviced by GTi engineering and Tim Stiles... Long way from london but great service for a great car. They are fantstic. Get well looked after ..unlike the cheap WRX's nackered for £4-5k!!

Why do people get so upset if others have their own opinions? If you love your car so much, and you are so sure its so great, then it shouldn't bother you, should it?

I think these cars are OK - I loved them when they first came out, but today, they are well.... just outdated, noisy and uncomfortable in comparison with most cars, and the performance is not much better then most hot-hatches. If you want a classic then fine, but don't expect everyone to say they are great, full stop - things have moved on somewhat over the past two decades.

Edited to say:

Henry Ford invented the production line and reasonable priced cars - ie his cars were the grandfather of all our cars. We all recognise and respect how innovative this was in the past but it hardly means that these cars are still good by today's standards does it?

Classic insurance is possible, I'm 25 (had mine 3 years), I've been quoted about £280 a year.

Running costs vary depending on how good the car is and if you do anything yourself on the car.

Just to put the record straight, only the final UR 20v models built in 90 & 91 fetched 35k which is about 45.5k in todays terms.

Also, around 95, the magazines pitched the UR against the original 94/95 Impreza, cossie and integrale. Their was nothing in it. Yes, all cars have moved on since then including the impreza, but its not as much as maybe people are making out. Yes in terms of power, but haven driven and owned most of these cars discussed, its not a car that will disgrace yourself.

Anyone who owns a half decent one with history would be wise to keep hold of it if they can as the values have bottomed out on them. If you believe the magazines the value is/will be on the way up shortly.

£280 to insure!!!! Christ I'm paying £378 for a crappy VW Lupo Diesel and it ain't a turbo!!

I am playing with the idea of selling the Lupo and running an old qauttro. This would be a second car running about 5,000 miles a year, the other car being a scoob.

Servicing and replacement parts costs could scare me off though (already expensive running scoob). I would want an std qauttro with a stainless exhaust Being the VAG group the Lupo cost me £159 for MOT and service.

If it cost say £500 a year to service and MOT, cheap insurance circa £300, would be reliable then I would be interested.

im 30 with 6points and a mcr postcode and i pay the RAC £1500 fully comp!

getting company car next year (vlovlov v40 SE!!) so will be able to do the limited mile thang on the quattro.

That classic quote was through Footman James, it was for 6000 miles I think. My cars off the road just now for a rebuild, the head gaskets started to blow and it was crashed into twice.

There's a few other companies who'll offer similar, best bet is to buy a copy of Classic Cars magazine and flick through the classifieds.

Some parts are scarily cheap, new head(complete) from Audi less than £300, new turbo(from a specialist) about £250. Some parts are expensive too and DIY, although possible isn't the easiest thing in the world.

This all applies to 10 valve cars, 20 valvers are a bit more expensive to buy and run. And they don't sound as good...

yeah im familiar with the old QOC forum (phil payne is one knowledgeable b*stard), though i cant get on it at work for some reason, thats why i come on here and be obnoxious!

im contemplating taking off the mid-box(10v wr) on my scorpion exhaust, as it sounds too muted.

(ive also heard the mid box acts as a flame trap too....with removal leading to a few feet of flamage out the rear if you tweak up the mixture!!)

what exhaust set up have you got and are you happy with the tune it plays?....this is the only quattro ive been in/heard so ive no benchmark.....
