The Capri Or Crappy?
#1
Well
I guess most of you will have seen the new Capri in Autocar. Sorry but i don't like it at all. The shape is wrong, hate the bulsh*t air vents.
But its the name that's wrong. I remember the Old "Carppy" and for me it just sums up all the Cr*p of the 70's. Ford look at the Capri and see a Euro-Mustang, i see a Cortina in drag, **** poor build, **** poor handling, chest wig styling.
I hope to God they DON'T do it!

Mega, that is blasphemy !
What was wrong with the build quality of the Capri ?, quite a solid car, having survived being in one when it turned over (due to the driver, not the car).
A legend, always will be.

FP - Yes, this year - early August. I did comment at the time about the other cars nearby, in that it made the pic look like it was from another time!

Mega...
Did you ever own a Capri?
Poor build quality?? lol How come so many are still around?
Tail happy? Yes sometimes. But stick decent tyres on the back and it cured it unless provoked.
I had some serious fun in my 2.0S

Agree with last writer.
Capris did not have crappy build and were v highly regarded drivers cars in their day (2.8s and 3.0.
The Capris I have owned were all v well made and v reliable and entertaining. Whilst I have enjoyed GTis my last old 2.8 had a much greater sense of occasion and being something special than any GTi I have owned.

Paul when you say special do you mean the brooklands model??? If thats what you mean and I had one of those i would be bringing it back to A1 condition and not taking it onto a track... Lovely car.
Was thinking of paying around £500 and getting meself an older 2.8i.
Would be a slow track car in comparison to everything else but one hell of a way to learn to drive tracks properly i think.

Amazed at the lack of derogatory comments about the old Capri. Being a 2.8 Injection owner, I thought i would be beating off the p1sstakers with a sh1tty stick.
If this is popular opinion, maybe Ford are wise to ressurect it, especially following the success of the BMW 1 series (sorry Mini) etc.
I haven't seen these new photographs or the spec: whats it to be?
My take on the Mk4 Capri would look like an updated, modern day, but retro design of the Mk3, with V6 Mondeo motor and 200+bhp, on a simple, proven but well developed RWD chassis and a dollop of oversteer dialled in. Keep the weight down, leave out traction/stability control, sat nav, electric seats and all the other crap. Add a sprinkling of Ford heritage and pitch it at the DRIVERS at under £20k. Hot cakes.
Sadly its a nanny state we live in: it just wouldn't be allowed nowadays. Remember the good old days of 205GTi's and 2.8i's flying backwards through hedges, the driver opening the door and brushing himself off, cursing that big lift. Nowadays it would end up in the hands of Claims Direct or some other ambulance chasing *****.

Great cars. I had a Mk I 3.0 GTXLR Broadspeed Bullet in Daytona Yellow with the obligatory matt black bonnet Seriously quick in its day with around 190bhp and a 0-60 in just over 7 seconds. That was Ferrari-beating in the mid-70s!

I liked the old capris... Dunno what the new one looks like - Anyone got a link / pic??
But my opinion of them was that they never performed like they looked. Simply because the majority had the weedy underpowered engines.
Now if they all had the 3.0 or 2.8 V6 then I think it would be a differnt story. And why not stick in a v8??
After being in oz for a bit I noticed that the Ford's euqivelant the the old Granny (Granada - boxy shape version) was (still is) the Falcon. Now that had a v6 as the basic option and Ford's finest - a meaty V8 on the higher spec versions. While over here in Blighty we get lumbered with weedy pinto and kent 4 pots.
So if the capri is ever going to be sucessful again.. it needs grunt, otherwise it'll probably go down the same route as the Probe and Cougar, looked good, but drove like a blancmange
edited...found the link above!
Looks Ok, needs to drop the chome vents on the arches and make the interior a bit more realistic, not something out of Star trek.

I owned a MKIII capri 3.0S the coolest car on earth for the money and in its day, and yes a standard ford fucus would kick its **** today, but it was built 25 years ago.
saying anything bad about an icon like the capri will result in me having to send round the boys!!!!
Mark
PS Did you ever own one? bet not.

A nice Capri, 2.8, 3.0, GTXLR MK1, Tickford is way cooler than a Scoob, the poor old Scoob is going thru what the XR3i went through during the nineties and the Capri during the eighties.
A lad at work has a Tickford and in a straight line its alarmingly quick, he bought it for six grand as keeps getting higher bids, nine grand being the latest, hmm how many Scoobs are appreciating in value ? not for another fifteen years once the ********* have killed most of them and people get nostaligic about them !

I actually owned a 24V V6 Probe and had a lovely engine. Essentially it was a rebodied Mazda MX-6 but everyone lovely the MX-6. LOL just shows you . It wasnt meant as a back road blaster more a relaxed GT. I enjoyed owning mine and was a great looking car in electric blue. Still the best looking car I have owned IMHO. Too many slag them off because they read a report in a magazine and havent actually been in one . Yes the handling wasnt as good as the scoob but lets face it the scoob isnt perfect either. Ooops shoudlnt have said that .

i had a 2.8i[classic blue over silver] and a allard turbo 2.8i my mate had a 3.0 ghia and a 3.0s. that lovely lazy v6 burble and pull looooooooovely. i still lovem.they were reliable and did the job you could really play with the oversteer[which was basically caused by the rear leaf sprigs moving sideways under load[becuase ford never put money into them in later life] as del boy would say lubly jubbly!!
