What's the Fastest & Cheapest 2nd hand Diesel?
#1
Ok here's a good'un for anyone who knows their stats...
I'm considering replacing scoob with a diesel! Ok its not that bad, I need an decent everyday hack, and probably buy a westfield or similar to **** about in.
So I want something cheap, quickish and economic. With the basic fact that most modern TD's are just as quick as thier 1.8 or even 2.0 petrol counterparts and use far less fuel in the process, it has to be a diesel.
So, I'm looking at a something with 60k-70k miles, some toys / leather a/c etc. Buzzing around the £4-8k mark
Btw when I say quickish, I mean 0-60 and 50-70 etc. I'm not too bothered about top speed.
I was thinking of something like a BMW 530td or latest 320td, but both are too expensive at the mo and the 525td is a bit too slow. I would'nt mind a Golf GTDi, but I guess that's too much too
So, any ideas anyone??

What about an older E36 BMW 325tdi- 0-60 in 8 and a bit seconds and in your price range
Don't think 8K will get you a golf TDi 130 which would be your other best bet (once remapped)

Should certainly get a 2nd hand Leon 110TDI, Ibiza 110TDI Sport or an Octavia 110TDI for that money ~ towards the upper end of your price range.
£300 buys you remap to 150bhp / 230 lbs.ft.

The seat / skoda equivelants sounds like a good idea mik, I'll look into that. And those "plug in" upgrades is an added bonus
E36 Beemer is an also an option that I looking at, but the market seems so flooded with the things, so I'm not sure that they are really worth the money many people ask.
Anyone tried the latest Mondeo 16valve diesels? The same engine in the transit goes pretty well (well, for a van).
cheers

For medium size, try a Citroen Xsara or Peugeot 306 or a 206.
The HDi is supposed to be a fine engine. The Ford TDCi is also worth a look.
It may be worth looking at a Diesel Saab 9.3. Apparently they chip easily (according to the bloke who wrote in to EVO or CCC...).
Vindaloo.

The first Golfs / Boras with the PD115 & 130 engines are getting to be around the £7K mark now.
The PD115 is underrated, it still kicks out well over 200lb-ft of torque as standard and is easily upgraded to 145 bhp / 275+lb-ft with a tuning box (about £300) or a remap (£400-500). The remap is done as an ECU flash upgrade via the diagnostic port.
The Ford TDCi diesels are very good too but I don't know if any Mondeos or Focuses will be in your price range yet.

if its VAG, what about Audi 80/A4/A6.
They've all had the 110bhp engine, so presumably will respond to the same chipping/tuning.
A quick look on autotrader showed up 97/98 A4's for ~6.5k
tempted myself.....

Some data from my remapped Golf PD 130. I tried 1/4 mile yesterday (my first time at track!) and ended up with 15.3s and 151.3km/h trap speed. The 60ft time was about 2.55s so I suffered from low traction, just spinning all over the place. My tires are already very slippery where ever I drive so probably I can break the magical 15s next time with new (road) tires
Based on that time & speed it can do 0-160kmh (100mph) in approx 17.3s - 17.5s.
It was nice to beat a Pontiac Firebird with V8 and 5.7 liters after hearing talk how TDI will have no chance

Rich, There is no such thing as the "latest" 525tds, they are all 530d's
Unless you were on about the outgoing shape. In which case the 530d is faster than the 525tds and has more or less the same MPG . BUT the 525tds is slower than the 320d, and less economicle. Thus why I say 320d or 530d and not 525d Or an old shape 325td.
I think the last paragraph I typed made sense
Btw looked at some Audis, most in the price bracket had done big milages (100K+) My limit is on 80K.
