Help me choose a car
#1
example mondeo V6 is a good buy.
Diesel power tends to mean more expensive engines... but im sure that the pugs will be in that price range.. and they have good engines. I dont like french cars tho.
Also - me m8 got a new Megane... 1.6... and he gets 42 mpg on motorway cruises
So u may not *have* to go diesel.
With a V6... u might be thirsty again, if u use the nice engine lots.
Its a good thing to be choosing a car in that range.
Lots of options.
If u care about selling the car on... try and catch ur initial reaction when thinking of cars. Its hard to do - but ur reaction will be the same as others. If u put on 18k a year, then someone is more likely to buy off of u if u have a diesel.
However, good cars are good cars... and someone is just as likely to get a nice V6 with toys off of u - IF it is a good car.
Hence the mondeo over the Pug.
Theres always Volvos and Saabs. Not sure on the prices tho.
*looks up*
Volvo 40s are in ur price range. Someone will buy that off u.
Theres lots of Saabs in ur price range. And they look great. Have toys. Not sure on the economy - but they all feel quick, and will go on for 100,000s miles... so someone will buy that off u. Servicing might be more expensive tho?
U could get an early Mk4 Diesel golf... just.

Ok, I’m now closing in on making a decision on my next car. The problem is, I don’t have a bloody clue what I want
It needs to cost between £3-6k and preferably somewhere nicely in between. It needs to have less than 70-80,000 miles on the clock (preferably well less!) and it needs to be in reasonable condition with full service history, etc. Some toys would be nice as would a bit of poke, etc. I need the car to be noticeably cheaper to run than the Scooby, which has had me looking at diesels primarily. I do about 50 miles a day of mainly motorway driving.
So far I’ve seen a few 406 3.0v6’s in my price range, which has lots of toys, but I’m not sure about their economy? Anyone got any stats for these, running costs, performance, etc? I also saw an Omega MV6 for £4500 (1998, 58k miles) I know the prices of Omega’s drop like a brick but surely that is meant to be 14500?? Hmmmm?
Feel free to make suggestions, post up links, pictures, etc, etc

Really does depend on what you want. For that sort of money/age/mileage you're clearly looking at a 'volume' car, rather than BM, Audi etc.
Prob go for a Focus at the £5k mark - should be able to squeeze one in there. Not exciting, but they go well enough and they've usually got good spec.
Re the ones you've mentioned - I had an Omega 2.5 for 2000 miles and averaged 22mpg. The 406 V6 will probably be much the same, esp if you're going round town a lot. And they both depreciate like a falling brick; you'd be mad to buy one.
If you don't mind miles and age, widen your horizons and look at an R reg Saab 9000 LPT. Tough as old boots, loads of kit, handle pretty well, vast amounts of space inside, and a good image. And fast, esp the higher powered ones. Plus they've done the bulk of their depreciating now and they're not stupid money to insure.

Surely a £5k 406 can't go that much lower in price unless you put mega miles on it or let it get into really tatty condition! I do some town driving but most of it is on the bypass or in the country.

Any more suggestions? I can't imagine how a car with so many toys and a nice 3.0 v6 would be so hard to shift in the £4-5k region Wierd! Looks like a brilliant car for the money. Anyone got any stats for it btw?

ppl buying a cheap car (under 7-9k) want a cheap car....they regard V6's and lots of toys as being costly to maintain, service, etc.
i bought a 9k passat V6....superb car but nightmare to shift on because at 9k you could get a much newer 1.8 passat......same prob for you, you try shifting a 5k car when the person could get a new/lower milage version without the big thirsty engine.

306 GTI6 / Rallye
Nissan 200SX S14a
Nissan Pulsar GTIR
Peugeot 406 V6 (as already mentioned)
Mondeo ST24
Toyota Celica GT4
In that order.
Having exactly the same considerations myself at the moment after sale of the Impreza....

If your thinking about V6's then I would seriously consider one of the below...
http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WWW/CARS_popup.asp?modelexact=1&make=VOLVO&min_pr=&pos tcode=ip22+4hw&source=0&model=S70&max_pr=&sort=3&v ariant=t5&mileage=&miles=200&keywords=t5&agerange= &max_records=200&search.x=38&search.y=8&start=8&di stance=142&adcategory=CARS&channel=CARS&id=2003230 93282495
I had one virtually identicle. Gorgeous car all round, should hold money faily well and will take high mileage easily. Search around and you should find what you want without too much problem.

the Celica GT4 ST185 gets my vote!
my mate has one with 130k miles, Full Toyota Service History, NEVER missed a beat, you can barely hear the engine, 60 miles on top gear come with 2300rpm, very good on fuel economy and VERY reliable.
HE bought it with 120k miles for 2k and the car is a UK spec.

Nah, I want to put some money into my flat For that reason Fiat coupes are out! I basically can't have a petrol turbo as I WILL use the boost and will get poor mpg. The also have scoobyish running costs. Overall my next car must be noticeably cheaper to run.

or how about mercedes?
Again.. big milage eater and sellable.
Another farmers car too
example C250
they are not sporty tho
but good to consider all options

think of all the cars u like - and drive them all.
I thought...'aye ok'... about driving the cars i was thinking of... but when i did - it amazed me how quickly i liked/ disliked particular cars.
And its fun

I'm not too sure what you really want? Are you looking for a cruiser that is capable of high MPG or something a little pokier. I'm sure that if you are considering a V6 then the MPG wouldn't differ overly from a low pressure turbo'd car. I'm not knocking the Mondeo but surely there are similar cars out there that are infinately better. Don't forget that becaise a car has a turbo the servicing costs are not necessarily going to be higher, although I know what you mean about using the turbo if its there
You've even got my head spinning trying to come up with ideas, your only solution is to buy autotrader and let it fall open and do the pin/eyes closed thing!!

I'm secretly hoping someone will suggest a car that will easily do 35ish mpg when you set the cruise control at 75mph but will be fairly punchy when you want it. The overall running costs (fuel, servicing, insurance, tyres) MUST be noticeably cheaper than my scooby. I've just calculated that I usually get 25mpg in the scooby.

Hey have a Saxo again, you always rave on about how much fun you had in your old one + they are cheap to run!!
I have a mint 99T plate VTS with 65k miles, its quick enough, handles great and returns well over 300 miles to a tankful (350 - 370 on long runs). This car whilst not being the best m'way cruiser certainly copes very well with my 80mile a day round rip to work
Insuance is under £500 and the servicing is reasonable - but then again you know all this from previous ownership
Your thread however seems to show that you would like a relatively big car so how'z about and early(ish) Vectra GSI??

I've got the wife on the case and I think she may have found what you want............

Sexy car, taken the major depreciation and you could probably find one with some warranty left within your budget. What would you rather have Vectra, Mondeo or Alfa, Hmmmmmmmmm?
And this ones even better....

Saxo,
Get an Integra R
A few about for 6k, and if you can insure the scoob you can insure that.
Not much goes wrong if properly maintained.

Wow, that black Alfa looks like a possiblity. Do they have reasonable performance/economy?
I fear if I go for an out and out hot-hatch or TEG I'd end up falling into the modifying trap and spend money on it. If I get something a little bigger and more sensible I'll just run it on 95RON fuel, mid-range tyres and not spend extra money on it.
