Wink

Look at www.Parkers.co.uk under the car reviews section. They say a 2.0TS has 155 BHP and averages 33mpg. There's a 1.8TS with 144BHP. I don't know anything about them but the wife has always fancied one, its quite surprising how much car you can get now for 5-6K.

Question

SB,

I have a Mondeo V6 Si that I may be selling (dependant on a price of another car I am looking at)
R plate (98) 62k miles and well within your budget.
This took the place of my Scoob and it is a very good car indeed. I would go as far as to say the best all round car I have owned.
Let me know if you would be interested in further details / pics ect ??

Cheers

PG

mid 30's mpg. Work is a 36mile round trip and I save a fortune now I am Scoobless
Scoob insurance was £750 myself (27yrs). Mondeo £300 with GF (23yrs) on policy !!
Good performance. Not kick in the back type stuff but pulls well in every gear all the way through the range.

The lift off oversteer in the wet is quite snappy too if you like that sort of thing. I would say it is snappier than the Scooby for it. Certainly I have never properly lost the back end of the Scooby, but a wet roundabout in a 406 V6 can be fun (or unsafe) depending on your take on things.

How about a Civic VTI? Very economical pottering round town & then quite fun when you get into the VTEC zone, handle well & sound great when in the VTEC zone

I have a 97 406 V6 with 68000 miles and in a straight line/cruiser it is excellent - 0-60 6.9, 0-100 19.4. Mondeo V6 does handle slightly better (steering feel and brakes considerably better) but is noticeably slower being of similar weight and about 15% less power and the ride is not as good. The main issue with the 406 is the steering weight is far too light, and there is not much feel, but you can still feel what it is doing and it is fun to throw about with a very wide limit to play in. The brakes are also not very good with sliding calipers on the front, it is easy to overheat Unipart type brake pads and the backing can come away from the pad. Toys: heated electric memory leather seats (not that comfortable on long trips though), cruise, 6CD, climate, remote closing, computer, rear blind, nice things like you hardly ever need to open the bonnet as it checks oil, coolant and washer levels for you. I get 26-28 mpg on my daily run of mixed roads, but I am quite heavy footed. 32-33 mpg on long trip with cruise set to 80 mph. Third gear is quite impressive from idle to 95 mph and you can overtake with huge confidence in any gear because it is so torquey.

Faults with mine apart from the usual consumables - brake pad issue, immobiliser cocked up one day - corroded wiring under the bonnet where it had got nipped by something else and previous owner had fitted driveshaft with wrong number of teeth for ABS sensor and then pulled the ABS bulb to hide the fault. That took some diagnosing because the ABS only shut down after you had been over 75 mph and worked again when the engine was restarted until you went over 75 mph.

If you could fit coilovers, AP 4 pots and modified the power steering it would be a tremendous car as the chassis and engine are quite competent indeed, but you may as well buy a 406 coupe has Brembos and slightly stiffer suspension, and is still within your price range.
